Mariel and the band blow me away every time ! SO GOOD.
Calgary, AB@The Palace Theatre
Wannita
November 26th 2023
Love the smaller, more intimate venue. Both artists and musicians were very talented. especially the guitar player Ben. Both Susy and Mariel had lovely clear voices. Unfortunately Mariel's mic was not set properly for the whole first half and we couldn't understand the words she was singing; they seemed muffled. Fortunately it was adjusted for the second half of the show and we could finally hear the words she was singing. Susy's mic setting was perfect for the whole show.
One tiny critique, I know this is easy laid back music but it needs a few more high energy songs inserted periodically in the playlist.
Overall we loved the concert.

About Mariel Buckley
“If you’re longing for the pensive tearjerkers of classic country music in the modern world, look no further than Calgary, Alberta singer-songwriter Mariel Buckley. With the soul of Emmylou and the keen eye of Springsteen, Buckley has been busy making a name for herself." — Bobbie Jean Sawyer, Wide Open Country
It’s the kind of sound many musicians take years searching for, and since the rave reception of Mariel Buckley’s acclaimed sophomore album, Driving In The Dark, she has planted her flag firmly as a singer-songwriter who’s in it for the long haul.
Buckley’s momentum has built quickly, and 2019 earned her Roots Solo Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and a packed live show schedule. She finds herself touring steadily with a captivating live outfit, and with performances in support of k.d. lang, Sam Roberts, Sarah Shook & The Disarmers and The Deep Dark Woods; she’s garnered an impressive resume.
Driving In The Dark solidified Buckley as a rising name among the roots community, and earned a coveted position as one of No Depression’s Favourite Roots Music Albums of 2018. The album even experienced chart success, sitting on the CBC Music' Top 20 List for more than 8 consecutive weeks - and placed No. 54 on the CBC Music’s Top 100 Canadian Songs of 2018 for ‘Rose Coloured Frames’.
Her songwriting has been described as melodic and tender - a "dazzling and assured take on the sounds of classic country." (PopMatters) Now carefully assembling songs for her third release, Buckley’s studious attention to her craft and proficiency in her curated sound will no doubt produce an exceptional collection of music.
She proves that with each new endeavour she is bound to vulnerability and driven to authenticity. This signature candour is what captivates audiences and listeners alike, and will continue to edge her forward. Whether you’ve heard Mariel Buckley or not, you will, and soon.
