The Downstrokes

The Downstrokes produce a music that fuses decades of sonic rebellion into a blistering, four-on-the-floor garage punk sound. Based in Frostburg, the band channels the raw energy of 60s garage rock, the gritty swagger of 70s New York punk, the ferocity of 80s LA hardcore, and the melodic hooks of 90s post-punk into a style that’s both nostalgic and defiantly fresh.

Fronted by vocalist and guitarist Gerry LaFemina, with Clint Higgins on drums, Greg Wood on bass, and Robin Summerfield on lead guitar, The Downstrokes have carved out a reputation as a cornerstone of the resurgent Western Maryland punk scene. Their debut album New York Girl paid homage to influences like The Kinks, Patti Smith Group, The Adolescents, and Pixies, while their 2019 EP Fall in Love with Punk Rock Again dared listeners to reconnect with the genre’s rebellious heart.

Post-pandemic, the band returned with Unsafe at Any Speed, named one of The Big Takeover’s Top 50 Albums of 2021. The magazine praised the record as “a bracing blast of punk rock energy that’s as smart as it is snarling,” highlighting the band’s ability to “bridge the gap between classic punk fury and modern-day urgency.”

Their 2023 LP This Close to Vertigo continues the band’s evolution, with tracks like “Kaput” and “Go Nowhere Kids” showcasing their melodic grit. Mastered by legendary punk producer Mass Giorgini, the album was hailed by New Noise Magazine for balancing “Pussy Galore-levels of noisy chaos” with “a classic punk rock sense of nonchalance.” Punk Rock Theory described their sound as “Buzzcocks meets Bad Religion punk rock,” while AWAY FROM LIFE noted the album’s “honest and sympathetic” garage-punk vibe.

2024’s split LP with Western Massachusetts’ longtime pop-punkers The Prozacs, Better Late than Never (Punkerton Records), proves that old punks get better with age, with Big Takeover Magazine naming it one of the top 100 albums of the year. A new Downstrokes LP, The Furious Hours, will be out in early 2026.

Whether playing packed shows at local haunts like The Deep End or playing on a turntable in your living room, The Downstrokes continue to make noise—loud, unapologetic, and unmistakably punk.
