I defy anyone not to love Hannah Rarity’s voice even if traditional Scottish and folk music is not your thing. The chemistry with the immensely talented Anna Massie works so well and for this show they played and encouraged a singalong to well known Christmas songs providing the audience with song sheets (a QR code for your phone). A really fun and relaxed evening.

Hannah Rarity has such a beautiful pure voice and Crail Community Hall was a lovely setting to hear her perform along with Calum McIlroy. She performed a mixture of traditional Scottish songs, covers and her own songs. Difficult to pick a highlight, but Hannah performing Tom Waits’s Take It with Me is simply breathtaking.

We were treated to a beautiful evening of song and sensitive guitar accompaniment by Hannah Rarity and Calum McIlroy. The audience were soothed by the warmth of Hannahs delivery of a variety of songs as well as the exquisite guitar playing of Calum. If you do have a chance to see them playing together or separately jump at it!

About Hannah Rarity
Renowned vocalist Hannah Rarity has left an indelible mark on the Scottish folk scene, securing her place as a standout artist. Her albums, 'Neath the Gloaming Star' (2018) and 'To Have You Near' (2022), both garnered critical acclaim, being shortlisted for Album of the Year at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Performing a carefully chosen mix of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material, her ethereal voice is reminiscent of legends such as Eva Cassidy and Cara Dillon. Equally at home in a number of genres, she is a sought-after collaborator, session vocalist, tutor and MC (presenter of Celtic Connections famed Late Night Sessions & Brew and A Blether).
Hannah has undertaken featured singer work as part of Brian O’Donovan & WGBH’s ‘A Celtic Christmas Sojourn’ in Boston (2018) and alongside the BBC SSO at Proms in the Park, as well as numerous UK television appearances (BBC Hogmanay 2015, 2017, 2020) and performs in her own right throughout Europe (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark), Australia and the UK. The recipient of the prestigious BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year award in 2018, Hannah has since collaborated with esteemed folk acts such as Blazin’ Fiddles, Rura, Niteworks, and Cherish the Ladies, and in 2022 was invited to work as co-musical director for the Opening Concert of Celtic Connections.
“Not only has she a wonderful voice, she has gravitas. When she sings, we are compelled to listen.” — Irish Music Magazine
