Michelle Malone's tour
Fan Reviews

This backyard concert exceeded our expectations in several ways,. First, the chemistry between Doug Kees and Michelle takes her amazing music to yet a higher level; and their banter adds comedy a bit like the venerable George Burns-Gracie Allen! They could but thier instruments down and keep the audience entertained while they let their hard-workin fingers rest. Second, Michelle's guitar skills seem to get better over the years. She played all acoustic for this gig and her lead playing...more challenging on an acoustic guitar...seemed more complex, clean, and controlled. She's got that percussive strum, like Charlie Patton, goin on strong and then she switches to aggressive but precise finger picking more like Robert Johnson. Her leads were polyrhythmic, ahead of and sometimes behind the beat. Like her singing, now that I think of it. And the high point of the night was her tour-de-force bottle-neck solo where her lead cycled from fast and loud to slower and delicate, cycling three or four times, each time increasing the energy for the crescendo ending. It was powerful, delicate, stunning. Third, Michelle's vocals always range from soft & soulful to raw, rowdy and...soulful. You can take Michelle out of Drag The River, but you can't take Drag The River out of Michelle. But since she's been expanding her Americana genre over the last fifteen years or so, this backyard gig was the perfect venue to share her full vocal range and nuanced intonations. She previewed a few of her Laurel Canyon interpretations and many of us are looking forward to hearing the whole production soon. Fourth, the backyard venue, the back porch stage, and the genial crowd created a more personable ambiance than in a formal music venue. We all visited around the food table and it felt like a family reunion. These four qualities, the Michelle-Doug chemistry; her range of guitar skills; her exquisite vocals; and the ambiance created synergy under the open sky. She was at her best for us.

Georgia’s finest rock and rollin’ blues artist came to town with guitarist Doug Kees and raised the roof on the 04 Center by a few inches at least! Michelle was on tour promoting her new album, 1977. The 15 song set included 5 off the new record as well as old favorites like “Weed & Wine” “Superball” and “Debris”. The show was full of energy and incredible guitar work from both Michelle and Doug Kees. The extended interlude in the crowd rousing “Preacher’s Daughter” that switched midway to Moanin’ Malone’s trademark blues inflection was both classic and fresh. Without a doubt, this show was a winner from start to finish. Michelle’s vocals , energy and crowd connection were top notch and both guitarists filled the place with incredible music. Throughout the isolation of the pandemic I felt the acute loss of live music. The 04 was a great place to enjoy Michelle’s show. If you can possibly get to onr of her shows, you owe it to yourself to get there. It’s soul medicine.
