Pandora's Key

Pandora’s Key, a band formed in 2016, brings music that is both melodic and heavy. It’s hard to put one specific label on it, but in general it seems to match the symphonic metal genre. At the end of 2016, the band launched the EP ‘Prometheus Promise’, which was well-received both national as international.

Pandora’s Key is a storyteller of mythes and legends from different cultures and times. Let the band take you on an adventure with their melodic sounds, their heroic tales following gods, mortals and everything in between.

2018 seems to be a very impactful year for the band, including a lot of new faces. With the return of violin plater and composer Rowan Schuddeboom (Rhovanion, Pyrates, Sneeuwstorm Ensemble) and the joining of the new members, vocalist Kelly Thans, guitar player Bram Luiken and drummer Dimmy Marcelissen (TerraDown), has the band a lot of potential to grow and develop in different directions.

The band has set a few pretty ambitions goals for itself. Behind the scenes the members are working on new material. Apart from that, the band hopes to be able to share their skills and creations with a big audience by performing and launching new material.

Voor een debuut is dit een zeer prettige kennismaking. Het toetsenwerk is sfeerbevorderend, het gitaar- en drumwerk is voor deze stijl afwisselend te noemen en ook de tracks hebben een eigen identiteit. Maaike beschikt over een prettige zangstem. Haar stem komt in de ballad mooi tot zijn recht en over de hele lengte van deze release zorgt ze voor veel memorabele momenten.

Pandoras Key delivers a well-produced album, filled with balanced compositions. Musically there is barely anything to complain about, well played guitar parts and keyboards dominate the EP and the vocals of Maaike are pleasantly accessible.

Natuurlijk zijn er nog wel de nodige verbeteringen mogelijk, maar het raamwerk staat als een huis. De gruntzang van gitarist Sebastiaan Pongers had wat prominenter in de mix mogen staan en dat geldt eigenlijk ook wel voor de drums, die nog wat krachtiger hadden kunnen klinken. Dat zijn echter slechts details, want over het algemeen laat deze professioneel vormgegeven debuut-demo duidelijk blijken dat Pandora’s Key zeker over het nodige talent en potentie beschikt. De variatie tussen heavy en meer ingetogen nummers op ‘Prometheus Promise’ is me in ieder geval prima bevallen en ik ben dan ook reuze benieuwd hoe deze band zich in de toekomst verder zal gaan ontwikkelen.
