About Alvin Davis

As a session player and music teacher, Alvin has worked with the likes of Andy Hamilton, Edwin Starr, The Foundations, Neville Staples (Specials & Fun Boy Three), Alton Ellis, Macka B, Jackie Graham, Nigel Kennedy and David Hinds of Steel Pulse. Releasing his debut album ‘Let It Blow’ (Sony Tristar 1992), was for Alvin; “an opportunity to bare my soul in the studio and fulfil my ambitions.” For the critics it was “an erotic mix of horn and sax with expressive sensuality.” ‘Let It Blow’ took Alvin around the world, with the album reaching number 4 on the American R&R (New Adult Contemporary) National Airplay chart, winning him the first round of the critical acclaim that has become a hallmark of his career on both sides of the Atlantic. The album also broke into the Top 10 of the influential Gavin A2 Adult Alternative chart in America. In fact, such was the Stateside success of ‘Let it Blow’ that Alvin was even a topic of conversation on the top rated US TV programme The Arsineo Hall Show, which can count likes of Madonna among its guests, and was also given a mention, on british TV, as,’ someone from the UK his been listening to,’ by none other than… Prince. The follow up ‘Let The Vibes Decide’ (Ripe Recordings 1994), did even better for Alvin, selling over 10,000 copies pre-release, it peaked at number 3 in the USA and took Alvin back on the road again, winning him more enthusiastic praise from the critics. This included comparisons with Gerald Albright, Kim Waters, David Sanborn and Kenny G. Take Flight’ (Hornblower / Teklife 1999) and Commotion (Hornblower 2007) were written, recorded and produced in Birmingham for his own Hornblower Productions, and also won crucial acclaim for the multi-talented saxophonist, vocalist, producer and songwriter. “…one of the hottest new Jazz / Soul talents.” - Dave Koz “Alvin Davis’s fusion comes straight off Sanborn…Alvin doubles on muted trumpet, producing a good impression of Tutu-era Miles…” - Jazz The Magazine, The Observer “Be warned…this is not jazz for the faint of heart or the straight purists. There are beats on this record, and while the beats don’t dominate the record, they do help define it…” - The Mac Report, Soul Trade “This is hot this is…sounding like those jazz funk days we keep hearing about…tuff.” - Willber Willberforce “…full of vibe, musicianship and integrity…he is not afraid to use some new sounds and phrases giving it that '‘new age depth'’...moods, original, uplifting and almost spiritual in places…” - Ash, Soul and Dance Review, Soul Trade 1995 “Mellow mellow jazz influenced dance…this carries on where ‘Let It Blow’ left off!” - Scootering Alvin Davis is a recording musician based around Birmingham in the UK, his passion is music.
