“How great was it to see Blackfoot out on the road keeping the legacy alive at the Chrome Drive stage in the UpState Saturday evening! The band’s beginnings from FL circa 1969 have evolved to a all new lineup centered out of Greenville SC, each member hand chosen by Rickey Medlocke. It was apparent at the opening blow of the harmonica on ‘Train Train’ during their entrance to the stage that the gathering of these five was no accident. Kenny Lawrence took command of the audience immediately extending the microphone stand out into the audience demanding participation. Moving from the 70’s to the 80’s Tomcattin’ and Marauder, Drew and Stuart showed no lack of fine Southern Rock guitar work that culminated in a 9 minute rendition of ‘Highway Song’. The Kentucky Headhunters who headlined the show are all outstanding musicians worthy of the respect they fittingly deserve! Who doesn’t appreciate a ‘free’ show, but I’d pay good money to see both these bands individually next time they play the circuit. A final word about Blackfoot, I feel at this point I’d much rather see a hand-picked band who carry on the legacy playing with passion, than a for all intensive purposes ‘tribute’ band with a longstanding member or two who merely go through the motions.” by DAve (Concert #637)

About Blackfoot

Blackfoot are a Southern rock band from Jacksonville, Florida. They were formed in 1972 and were contemporaries of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but with a harder rock sound. They had a number of hit albums in the 1970s and early 1980s before their popularity started to wane. They had broken up by 1984, though not before former Uriah Heep keyboardist/songwriter Ken Hensley had joined the group during their last couple of years together.

Vocalist Rickey Medlocke revived the name in 1987 with a new backing group and released two additional albums ("Medicine Man" and "After The Reign"). In 1996 Medlocke disbanded the group, and joined Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In 2004 a second resurrection of Blackfoot took place with founding members Jackson Spires, Greg Walker and Charlie Hargrett. Medlocke was not available, however, and the frontman role was given to Bobby Barth. Tragedy struck in March 2005 when Spires died suddenly of an aneurysm, but the band decided to persevere for the time being. Following the will of Spires, Austrian drummer Christoph Ullmann was hired as permanent drummer. In 2006, the band toured and was backed up by Jay Johnson on guitar and vocals. A live DVD was released in 2007. In 2007, the band is touring and consists of bassist Greg Walker, guitarist Charlie Hargrett, guitarist and lead vocalist Bobby Barth, and drummer Michael Sollars.
