That he is an adept songwriter was demonstrated with the release of his debut EP. Yet the release of You Are Alone reveals Muinos to be a multi-faceted lyricist of the highest order, channeling the empty lonliness of Australian life encapsulated in the writing of authors such as David Ireland and Tim Winton and bands such as The Drones and New Gods. You Are Alone presents a shift away from the Americana influences of Muinos’ debut release. While the debut EP shimmers in the sun You Are Alone is sunburnt, which belies the reality that it was recorded in a tiny underground studio underneath a mirror shop in Fortitude Valley with legendary producer Magoo. At times painfully autobiographical and brutally bare, Muinos’ latest offering reflects a marked maturation in the songwriter, substituting additional instrumentation and layered production with emotional complexity. In the great folk tradition however such complexities are delivered with a cutting simplicity evidenced even in the single word titling of each of the five songs: Mum. Cinderella. Baker. Sydney. Dog.
