About Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun
Turn the clock back a decade and Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun, are one of the hardest working bands in the UK. After signing with Xtra Mile Recordings (Frank Turner, Against Me!) ‘Death’ was the big introduction the band needed picking up support across Radio 1, XFM, 6 Music and Kerrang across the 4 singles released, including Zane Lowe’s Next Hype accolade (England’s Dead), introducing track of the week (A Song About Death) and a Maida Vale live session. Elsewhere they received Single of the Week at Kerrang Radio (New Natives) and Exposure with John Kennedy at XFM.
Described then as “Acoustic-led songs that bristle with an energy redolent of punk rock record collection and love concerts in hot rooms. A blast.” 4/5 Kerrang! The album landed two Top 10 chart positions in the iTunes Singer songwriter Chart (7) and the Record Store Chart (5) in its first week of release.
Tipped as one of NME’s bands to watch for 2012 the band filled much of 2012 & 2013 with extensive touring including a 30 date UK headline tour, a further 20 date run in support of Frank Turner, a US run supporting Dropkick Murphy’s plus UK and EU festivals and a welcome return to SXSW. Following an explorative stint under the shortened moniker of 'Solemn Sun' the band are back to pick up where they left off.
Returning after an 10 year hiatus with ‘Reno’, their first offering from forthcoming album ‘Colour’, sets the scene for their most ambitious effort to date.
If the band’s critically acclaimed softmore effort ‘Death’ (2012, Xtra Mile Recordings) was concerned with the end, ‘Colour’ is a narration of everything that comes after. It’s a break up record, with hope and ambition.
Focused on prominent occurrences in Lockey’s life after ‘Death’ the album discusses the thoughts and feelings he’s most at war with. Dealing with the premature end of a marriage, rediscovering himself as an individual and finding ways through are themes that bubble under the surface throughout; with notions of all punctuating each song.
