About Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine
Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - aka Carter USM - spent most of their performing live (1987-1998) as two guys and a drum machine and a handful of pop culture samples. The style is somewhere between The Clash and Pet Shop Boys with punning and lyrics about Britain in the 90s. A journalist once quipped that Carter lyrics were cribbed from the London A-Z book of maps.
While remaining punky and independent in spirit, Carter USM signed to Chrysalis/EMI in order to crossover to the pop charts.
Carter USM were Jim Bob (James Robert Morrison) on vocals and Fruitbat (Leslie Carter - aka Fruity) on Guitar. Carter USM quit writing new material when it "stopped becoming fun", but Jim and Fruity have played shows together for charity concerts. Both are still active in music.
Fruitbat has released solo material using the name Abdoujaparov; named after his favourite cyclist. Currently he releases albums using the name iDou.
Jim Bob is releasing solo material as well with his band called Jim's Super Stereoworld and has also released material just using the artist name Jim Bob.
In 2007, Carter reunited for two "farewell" gigs. The first show announced - taking place on 2 November 2007 at London's Brixton Academy with support from Sultans of Ping - sold out in five days with little advertising except word of mouth. This sell-out prompted another concert to be arranged, taking place at Glasgow Barrowlands on October 20, 2007. The reunion celebrated twenty years since the band's foundation and ten years since their split. The gigs were performed as the original two-piece of Fruitbat and Jim Bob, who more or less kept their promise to play "all the hits and all the favourites".
In 2008 two more live dates were announced for Birmingham Academy and London Brixton Academy for 21st and 22nd November 2008...(Jim's Birthday)
