About Edward R.
Body Corporate, the new EP from 27-year-old Melbourne musician and producer Edward R. (real name Geoffrey Roberts) is a 5-song opus of intricate, immersive, psychedelic pop that recalls Ariel Pink and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Written after a period of uncertainty and emotional turmoil, the EP explores love, heartache and connection through the story of a man from the past who is transported into the future, who is looking for love.
Over the five tracks, Edward R. explores these themes through 60s chamber-pop hooks, dreamy guitar riffs and elegant, lush production, that harkens to the past but feels firmly planted in the present. Body Corporate is Edward R. proving himself to be one of the most interesting and versatile new voices in Australian indie-pop.Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Geoffrey has been playing music since he picked up an old, battered SG copy at fourteen, and wrote a little melody on the instrument’s only string. “Since then”, he says, “it’s all been self discovery and intuition.”Growing up with musically adept friends, and moving to London with band HUNTING, has provided to be formative experiences for his main solo project, Edward R..
Body Corporate is the follow up to Geoffrey’s much-loved debut EP Agrabah in 2016. The EP featured the track 'Wolves And The Water’ which has been streamed over four million times, and earned Geoffrey a coveted Triple J Unearthed feature. After the release of Agrabah, Geoffrey found himself at a crossroads, unsure of what he wanted the Edward R. project to be, but knowing that he wanted to create music that allowed him to play around with different genres, and not be pigeonholed as an artist. During this period, he moved back to the Sunshine Coast and started working on music that would eventually become Body Corporate. Without knowing it, Geoffrey had created a conceptual project. “I realised there was a common vein between all 5 songs - this theme of ‘someone from the past finding love in the future’... after connecting the dots; the name Body Corporate kept rolling around my head”he says. The EP was recorded between the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne, with Geoffrey producing and playing most of the instruments that appear on the record. Drums on the EP are played by Isaac Leong Loon, with engineering and additional production by Elliot Heinrich. While conceptual, Geoffrey says that the EP also hits close to home. When recording the EP he says he would regularly “lean towards the existential thought that that this [EP] is an extension of how I personally feel: Out of place, in the wrong time, but forever longing to be accepted and loved.”
