About A Bit On The Side

A Bit On The Side (or ABOTS for short) is a band that was born in a bar. Their unique sound is a boiling hot blend of Duncan Townsend’s theatrically playful storytelling, Little Brother Jamie’s blister-fingered rockabilly double-bass slap, Jakob Klay’s electrifying spikes ’n’ wails and U.E. Brown’s take-no-prisoner grooves – all polished off with tight-knit four-part vocals. Their name (which is usually used to describe an extra-marital affair) suggests something exciting, ‘naughty’ and unconventional. Duncan was a singer/songwriter from England and American-born Jamie was in a Rockabilly band when they met on the live music scene around Hamburg’s notorious red-light district. Both wanted more, so they disappeared on a six-day songwriting binge where they lay the foundations of A Bit On The Side. After completing his jazz guitar studies in Cologne, Jakob saw ABOTS at a seedy jam and wanted in. When Duncan asked, “are you any good?” Jakob replied, “I’m the best” – case closed. The missing key turned out to be mutual friend U.E. Brown. His brute-force beats marched in and locked together A Bit On The Side’s foot stomping and wildly danceable style. Their debut album was recorded live over four days at Berlin’s Phlexton Studios, under the helm of rising-star producer Kraans de Lutin. Naughty, playful, entertaining, cheeky. A saucy soup of table-top romps and wild excursions. Rock'n'Rag tales for dancing and cheer.
