About Teddy & The Roosevelts

The co-founder and songwriter from King Wilkie marks his debut and new direction with the release of The Genesee EP. Recorded in Central Virginia with his band “The Roosevelts,” Pitney draws from a well of Americana while painting with shades more undefined and foreign. The music is Laurel Canyon. It’s the Rust Belt. It’s visceral but arranged; rock and roll but humble. It may be reminiscent of Nick Drake, Paul Simon or Rick Danko, but these songs are neither yesterday nor tomorrow. These are true songs. Genuine. These are songs from the heart. In 2002, Pitney co-founded the Americana/bluegrass band King Wilkie, which was named IBMA's Emerging Artist Of The Year in 2004. The album Broke (Rebel Records) was #1 on the International Bluegrass Charts for several weeks that year, while Pitney’s song “Brokedown and Lonesome” stayed atop the Bluegrass Singles Chart for over ten weeks. In 2007, King Wilkie released the album Low Country Suite (Zoe/Rounder Records), which was guided by producer Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, Wilco). Like the band’s debut record, the album again included more than half a dozen of Pitney’s original songs, including “Wrecking Ball,” which Richmond DJ and promoter Tim Timberlake calls, “arguably the most substantial new bluegrass song of the millennium." Uncle Earl (with Gillian Welch) featured Pitney’s “The Last Goodbye” on Waterloo, Tennessee, a record produced by Led Zeppelin alumni John Paul Jones. After taking a year off from music, Pitney rededicated himself to his craft in the winter of 2009. Locked away in a cottage on Martha’s Vineyard and armed with a house full of instruments, notepads, and microphones, he wrote and recorded over a dozen songs before returning to Virginia. That fall, he headed into a local studio and recorded The Genesee EP with fellow King Wilkie alumni Jake Hopping, guitarist Brian Chenault, drummer Brian Caputo and singer/songwriter Sarah White (Jagjaguwar, Yerbird Records). Since then, Pitney has been playing solo shows under his name while shows including the band have been billed as Teddy & The Roosevelts. They are raw but refined. They are a 1957 D-18 Martin guitar, dusty and dirty tube amplifiers. The songs are of heartache, family and friends woven into arrangements filled with hooks and ornaments. These are true songs. Genuine. These are songs from the heart.
