About Jeff Hortillosa
New Studio EP "The Horticulture Volume 1" Out May 8th, 2020
Debut Short-Film "War Monkey" Out April 3rd, 2020
Jeff "Horti" Hortillosa's latest batch of adventurous Americana music is new studio EP "The Horticulture Volume 1", set for release on Friday May 8th, 2020. Pertinently speaking to the upended world we now find ourselves in, the 4-song EP is brimming with eclectic and virtuosic musicality and thought- provoking lyrics that look to explore the current political climate of global dissonance and dissect the cultural implications of Hortillosa’s Filipino American heritage.
Along with "The Horticulture Volume 1", Hortillsa will be releasing the EP's artistic companion and his debut short-film "War Monkey," which will be available to stream on YouTube on Friday April 3rd, 2020. The 25-minute "War Monkey" draws on the themes and music found on "The Horticulture Volume 1", with the film’s narrative loosely based on that of lead single “Jesus Christ." Hortillosa directed, acted, handled props, scored music, and pitched-in with editing for the ambitious project.
Hortillosa embodies an intriguing study in contrasts.
The guitarist/singer/songwriter is raised by immigrant parents, yet he has gone onto to be a trailblazer in the modern Americana scene. He’s an academically-accredited intellectual, but he enjoys playful irreverence in his music. He’s best known for playing a wild strain of bluegrass with the Austin-based, award-winning band Whiskey Shivers, yet his solo releases are decidedly non-bluegrass-centric.
Jeff’s solo music is best described by his unique “Horticulture” sensibility, and Horticulture is cultivated from bizarre jazz chords, passages of pastoral folk, raunchy roots-rock, buck-toothed Southern funk, and even strains of World music. His lyric writing brims with barbed wit, poetic flair, intriguing character development, an impressionistic narrative touch, and clever storytelling.
In 2017, Jeff issued his critically-acclaimed solo debut, Corpus Callosum. He followed that up with his duo, Robin Alice, with vocalist/actress Kelley Jakle. The pair released a slew of singles, and the Here and ThereEP in 2019. In addition to his musical output, Jeff has appeared as an actor in the movie Pitch Perfect 3, and plans to broaden his creative scope through a myriad of musical and non-musical artistic endeavors.
