About GALVEZTON

GALVEZTON is Robert Kuhn who was born in a Houston hospital more dead than alive in 1978. He was revitalized and with prayers and deals and grown with the help of loving parents into a poet and musician who has spent most of his adult life traveling most of the world under varying circumstances, mostly in poverty but occasionally in riches, although you’d never know the difference.

He is well studied literature and mathematics, was an Academic All American linebacker, speaks several languages and is currently in the process of releasing his third studio album, persevere - a nine-song collection written and recorded in Galveston, Texas, where Robert resides. Galvezton was the islands’ original name, it was discovered by Bernardo de Galvez.

His first album, "Everybody Knows "(2014), was embraced by the local press and commercially successful enough to free him from his day labor at a Houston Shirt Factory and devote time and energy to touring and playing music with his surf, rock ’n’ roll, blues, folk and reggae band of friends which included the late great extraterrestrial blues legend, Little Joe Washington.

They toured all over the United States and Mexico for years having a good old time until the last day of August 2019 while on the road in Western Colorado in support of their second release, Maria the Gun. Robert was in a nearly fatal van wreck that left him hospitalized in critical condition. He returned to Galveston six weeks later hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, but happy to be alive at all. With funding and support of friends and fans from around the world, Robert began a long quiet healing process that yielded this latest album.

persevere, is a transcendent psychedelic folk experience of electronic and organic instruments; poetry and sound; light and darkness. It’s uplifting and out there for and will be available soon in all forms. This world is changing so fast. Robert hopes it will take him back on the road to share this meaningful new music with his friends and family he's made along the way.

Leaving Is Returning (Weasel Press) his debut Creative Non-fiction book will be released around the same time as persevere…

"International troubadour and communitarian surfer Robert Kuhn is back with another single leading up to the release of his album persevere. The new song, 'Screen Savior', might be his best yet. Kuhn’s weathered vocal is equally haunting and melodic. Yes it is raspy, salty, smoky, and ashy but he knows how to command it, with melodic prowess that supports his vocal leanings. The atmospheric layered textures supplied by his well travelled band conjure immediate comparisons to Phosphorescent,
with the down home soul of artists like Justin Townes Earle. He also has the indie psych blues cool kid feel of Kurt Vile, and shows a lot of this swagger on ‘…Savior'.

The track is produced with deep dreamy layers and intergalactic sonic textures that together create a big sound. 'Screen Savior' features a fat droning under layer that’s boisterous in it’s own light. Altogether the traditional chord progression becomes filled with harmonious overtones. Kuhn is renting every piece of your auditory landscape on this thick production. You will get soaked in these dreamy shoe gaze vibes.

His music is a fair mix of mystery and easily accessible. It’s relative to Kuhn’s traditional leanings. He understands the foundational legacies of our popular music, the standard arrangements known to Folk, the Blues, and Gospel. Combined with his penchant for indie rock, Kuhn would sit well on a bill with recently popular indie favorites like The War On Drugs and Lord Huron.
