Josh Gonzales

Josh Gonzales is a Filipino singer-songwriter raised and currently based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. His music is breezy, light, and emotive, a brand Josh describes as “soul folk pop”. The music takes on a slight Hawaiian/Polynesian feel with lilting guitars, light percussion, throbbing keyboards, and galloping rhythms with vocals reminiscent of a combination between Jack Johnson and John Mayer. The result is an eclectic, passionate, and charming musical experience, which poignantly showcases Josh’s attentive, creative, and penetrating spirit and work ethic. All of this creative work grew from his exposure to church music early on. “…My parents never introduced gospel music to me [but] I fell in love with soul music and it’s deeply affected my sound.” Josh began playing piano at the age of nine and continued in a conservatory playing style through ninth grade. At sixteen, Josh picked up the guitar and took singing lessons at nineteen. Now, at twenty-five, Josh knows how to create great verses and melodies with the right amount of instrumentation and fortitude. Josh’s co-songwriter, Thomas St. Onge, plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, and drums. Thomas also fills audio engineering, mixing, and production voids. As an introspective musician, Josh provides a poetic and soul-stirring journey backed with heartfelt lyrics and beautiful melodies. On the topic of music, Josh “loves the pure honesty of music. I love how it makes me feel and helps me connect with other people.” Moreover, “I love connecting with audiences.” In addition to the psychology studies, Josh enjoys basketball, watching television, and reading books. Interestingly, Josh’s laid-back, vocal music is indicative of John Mayer, Jack Johnson, and Xavier Rudd. Josh’s music paints a picture of heartwarming honesty, incredible vulnerability, and it showcases a person, “…still finding his way through this world and wanting to make genuine connections with people, not just as a musician, but as a person.” Essentially, Josh wants to “penetrate the world” and gain acceptance among the larger Canadian music community.
