About Canvasounds Collective

CanvaSounds initially began at a Berklee composition concert, when three of the group’s founding members were excited to find that there were two female composers on the program. After realizing that two was a small number to be excited about, we decided to gather together as many female composers from our school as we could. Once our members became established, we found that we were all from different countries and cultures, and we were all interested in writing different musical styles. To represent that diversity we decided to base our pieces on external media - initially paintings, which inspired our name, CanvaSounds. We then opened ourselves to collaboration and conversation with artists of varied media, quickly expanding to include photography, poetry, and sound design. On April 27, 2013 we had our first concert at an art gallery, playing to a packed house. Each of our subsequent concerts have been as well-attended as the first; at least half of our audience members are new to classical concert music. Our ensemble continues to foster communication in new ways, regardless of nationality, gender, or musical preference. Collaborating to create audible art based on multimedia since 2013.
