About lyricist

July 4th 1986 was not only Independence Day for the country; it was also the birth of David Damarius Young soon to be known by many as Lyricist. In many ways, music has always been apart of David’s life. Growing up on the Westside of Detroit, having entertainment/musically inclined parents and siblings, it was easy for David to adapt to the world of entertainment as a child. From singing and acting in plays to playing instruments and sharpening his skills in writing music; David has always been multi-talented. Little did he know his life will be redefined by tragedy and hope at the tender age of 10. In 1996, David’s brother, Jason Jermynn McKinney aka “Sur Jay”, passed away. Jason had a big influence on David’s love for music. David always sat back and watched his brothers’ rap at family parties and reunions. After returning to Detroit from a 4 year hiatus in Las Vegas, Nevada, David began to piece together his interest in music. Becoming involved in rap battles citywide and performing in school parking lots, David sharpened his skills as an MC. But he noticed something was missing. As the thoughts of his brother’s memory came about, he found his calling and HOPE. In 2002, David became Lyricist and launched Sur Jay Records where the spirit of his brother thrives. Lyricist and his brother, Sur Jay, shared the same dreams and passion for music. In Lyricist and Sur Jay Records, Jason’s dream will live on. That’s what drives Lyricist to be the best MC he can be. DEDICATION.
