About Paul Lee Kupfer

A native of the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, Paul Lee Kupfer has traveled the US and Europe performing original music for more than 10 years. He has lived in Philadelphia, California, North Carolina, Tennessee, and currently resides in Montana.

From 2012 to 2016 Paul performed, wrote and recorded songs with The Bus Driver Tour as a multi-instrumentalist on drums, bass, guitar, piano and harmonica. In 2017 he released his solo debut album, "Where the Wind Goes". His second album, "Mind Wanderer" is set to be released in February 2020.

His songs are original, vivid and imaginative, yet steeped in the timeless American folk tradition. His writing has been compared to that of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young and John Prine.

Paul has played alongside The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Taj Mahal, Shovels & Rope, Truth & Salvage Co., Sarah Jarosz, Pokey Lafarge, The Emmitt Nershi Band, Los Lonely Boys and many more talented artists. He has performed at Red Ants Pants Festival, Kauai Folk Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Rhythm and Blooms Festival, Lava Folk Festival and many other festivals, theaters and venues across the US.

Somewhere along the way, though, Kupfer managed to stay in one place long enough to record Where the Wind Goes, his debut solo album. It’s a collection of unreconstructed folk in the style of early Bob Dylan, John Prine, and Arlo Guthrie, recorded at Wild Chorus Studio here in Knoxville with Jamie Cook, Robert Richards, Evie Andrus, and Josh Oliver. The songs range from quiet melancholy (“Highway to the Coast”) to shuffling blues (“Riverbank Blues”) and vibrant, fiddle-fueled road anthems (“Where the Wind Goes”). -KnoxMercury Nov, 2016
