About Creature Canopy

Creature Canopy is a two-piece Electronic Rock outfit from Denver, Colorado. The band is populated by Cody Troyer (Vocals, Production, Synthesizers) and Joe Mondragon (Vocals, Guitar, Bass). Troyer, a jazz studies minor in college who was bad at jazz, had always written and played music, but never in serious projects. He grew up listening to any and all music featured at Warped Tour, and accredits this upbringing with his success in the pit. Mondragon fell in love with music after seeing “Yellow Submarine,” and knew he wanted to be a professional musician after performing “Let It Be” during a high school talent show. He studied music business at University of Colorado Denver, and (conversely to Troyer) has been a member of more than 20 Denver bands (Chemistry Club, Bad, Almost Legends). Mondragon met Troyer met through a mutual friend in the winter of 2015, when Mondragon was commissioned to play a retirement party, and invited Troyer to accompany him. Despite the disparity in historical musical taste, and schismatic views on the movie Interstellar, the duo began writing together in the summer of 2015. They found musical common ground in burgeoning Indie-Pop groups of the time (Bastille, Churches, Alt-J) and merged their collective influences into the new project. After months of consideration, they decided to go with the name Creature Canopy. Which is fine. It has good SEO, which is nice. 6/10. The release of their first video for their single “Us Against the Cause” (October, 2015) had critics flocking to the band with comments like: “The beard part doesn’t really make sense.” (Dan Rachlitz, the video’s director) and "Joe [Mondragon] are you naked in this??” (Debra Mondragon, Mondragon’s mother) Creature Canopy released their first EP (Self-titled) in December of 2015. The Permanent Rain Press (A real publication) praised the debut as “upbeat and fresh,” and "technically captivating with its use of electronic beats and the pair’s poignant, contrasting vocals.” The third song from the EP, “Heartbeat,” was selected as a finalist for 93.3 KTCL’s Big Gig 2016 contest. The band released their second EP, “Again” in December of 2016 and played their release to a sold out audience at Larimer Lounge in Denver. They are going to keep being a band.
