About Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery takes you back to pre-WWII style country music with his renditions of knockdown banjo and singing from the likes of Uncle Dave Macon and Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones, as well as guitar. Robert was born October 20, 1983, grew up in Moulton, Alabama, and was introduced to old time mountain music when he was around three years old. His father listened to the Grand Ole Opry every Saturday night on the family's radio. When Robert was 12 years old, he took guitar lessons from Mr. Jeriel Parker and learned the basics. He taught himself banjo from listening to Grandpa and Oswald on the Opry, and he further learned from his friend, Leroy Troy. He graduated from Lawrence County High School and Auburn University, and has placed or won in literally dozens of regional and national contests, including the 2004 Old-Time Banjo National championship at Uncle Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, one of the premium music contests in the South. Montgomery has also won awards for old-time singing, Appalachian folk singing, mandolin, and guitar. He has been featured on on a number of television and radio programs including RFD-TV’s “Cumberland Highlanders’ Show”, and WSM Radio’s “Ernest Tubb Record Shop’s Midnite Jamboree” and “Opry Star Spotlight”. Montgomery is known for his wit and stage-presence as well as his musical talent. He joined the Warrior River Boys in January 2008 and has appeared with them since that time. He has appeared on stages with, in addition to the Warrior River Boys, a number of artists including Leroy Troy, Mike Webb & Charlie Collins, Jeremy Stephens, and Phillip Steinmetz. He has also made numerous recordings on his own, and has appeared on recordings with Bobby Osborne and Marty Stuart. His hobbies include sports and collecting old-time country and blue grass recordings and memorabilia. He lives in Moulton with his wife, Sara, son, Jimmie, and daughter, Annie Mae.
