About Chrysanthe

Chrysanthe Tan (សុវណ្ណបុប្ផា) is a Cambodian-Greek-American composer, violinist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. As a solo artist, she performs electroacoustic baroque pop music incorporating violin, looping pedals, vocals, and several other instruments. As a composer, she gravitates toward intimate solo & chamber music that features spoken text.

Her fascination with combining spoken word and music arose from both an innate love of poetry and music as well as a determination to reckon with the auditory processing challenges she grew up with; to this day, she has trouble understanding verbal instructions, conversations, and lyrics. As a (proud) autistic person, Chrysanthe has always relied on music to be her primary language of communication, and for that reason, her music has always been a potent means of survival and connection.

In 2015, Chrysanthe released Stories, her debut album of chamber music for piano, strings, and light electronics, and was featured as a Spotlight Composer on the ASCAP website. She also went on an international tour (The Honeymoon Tour) with pop artist Ariana Grande as her solo violinist. In 2016, Chrysanthe attended the Sound/Word Composer Residency in Syros, Greece, began her second album of musical poetry (Homecoming), composed a solo violin piece (On the Other Hand) for emerging contemporary artist Adrianna Mateo, who premiered it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and began gathering a group of engaged artistic supporters via the crowdfunding patronage platform Patreon.

Other artists and advents Chrysanthe has toured, performed, recorded, and collaborated with include Paul Anka, Marco Antonio Solís, Marc Anthony, Bastille, Alicia Keys, Common, Jennifer Hudson, David Foster, television shows Glee, 1600 Penn, America's Next Top Model, MTV Movie Awards, American Music Awards, and more.

Chrysanthe holds a B.A. in Creative Writing from Stanford University, an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from California Institute of the Arts, and an M.F.A. in Music Composition and Violin Performance from CalArts. In addition to her musical endeavors, Chrysanthe is a published writer whose poems, stories, reviews, and handmade chapbooks appear in places like The Volta 365, Dum Dum Zine, Next Words, Yale University and CalArts libraries.
