About Strange Majik

"David Pattillo is something of a blues rock cult hero in New York City, but you could likely tell that from looking at him.” The Deli Magazine.

In March 2020 at the onset of the Covid lockdown, the release of Strange Majik's new LP "20/20" fell flat as a pancake. So did the Tribeca 5 year-long Tuesday residency. Unlike the mass exodus of New Yorkers running for the hills, Pattillo's music career stood still. It was time to learn, reflect and grow. With the discovery of an old VHS of Cornell Dupree guitar licks and Bowie's 100 favorite books, Pattillo spent the lockdown reading, writing, learning and eventually producing what would become the brand new LP, "Strange Majik And The Righteous Wrongs." Aided remotely by the his ace band members, and in the studio by his 17 year old son, they set out to make it work. Even Geoff Burke from Harry Connick Jr. remotely recorded stunning sax parts from home. Today after featuring “Midnight Promises” on air, New York’s prestigious WFUV Radio has called the album, “A sensational collection of soul inspired rock ‘n’ roll songs.” Chilean magazine Revista Rocnrol says "worthy of a tarantino soundtrack!" The UK's Powerplay Magazine says "They're here to pinch your fags and run off with your date, all whilst you're dancing to their fantastic music."

With over 100 published songs and a lengthy credit list, Pattillo has a history in the music scene. He has written and produced songs for Motown/Universal, worked with super producers Linda Perry and The Berman Brothers, co-written with Nashville music row coterie, co-produced the Live At The Artists Den series on PBS (for which he was nominated for an Emmy), hosted a UK radio show on Amazing Radio, and paid his dues working with a long list of artists from Public Enemy to The Beastie Boys in the NYC studio world. His true love is writing and performing music and discovering great musicians. And since 2015 he has done just that with Strange Majik.

Recently he and his band opened for Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers, and in the past veteran songwriters Ray Wylie Hubbard and Willie Nile. They have shared stages with NYC buzz bands Hollis Brown, Daddy Long Legs, The Mystery Lights, Liza Colby, and Fiona Silver. He has appeared with Clem Burke (Blondie), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith), Mark Bosch (Ian Hunter) and toured throughout the US, UK and Europe and has been featured in Shindig Magazine UK, Record Collector Magazine, Creem Magazine, The Deli Magazine, and many blogs and podcasts around the US and abroad. His songs have been licensed by international sports brands, TV shows and films.

Highlark Magazine says "There’s something about him that brings you back to the 70s – not just the look or his authentic sense of character, but that blues rock sound with a gritty, real performance that now seems to be a rare gem among the new waves of music.” The UK’s Shindig Mag says “The British influence is all over Strange Majik’s sound. You can hear The Stones, Ziggy era Bowie and more than a little Hendrix whilst still managing to sound as American as apple pie.” T-Rex/Bowie super producer Tony Visconti recently posted on social media "David Pattillo and his band are fantastic. I call it Progressive Blues!” In a review of their album 20/20 The Deli Magazine calls it “truly contemporary” saying it's "a psych-y, funky odyssey that reads like an alternate history Summer of Love.”
