About Up dharma Down

Up Dharma Down, also known as UDD, is a band from the Philippines. They have been together since 2004. The group incorporates influences from rock, trip-hop, electronica and post-rock to create a sound which stands out in the local scene.

The band got the name from the word Dharma, meaning the laws of life. In whatever case, it is a law that connects everything in existence no matter how diverse they are. This is how the band explains their music, having rather dissimilar musical influences that results into a dynamic sound that still meets halfway as it appeals to a certain group of listeners almost everywhere.

Up Dharma Down is composed of Armi Millare on keyboards, vocals and rhythm guitars, Carlos Tanada on lead guitars, Ean Mayor on drums and human turntables and paul yap on bass.

Before joining the band, Millare and Mayor used to play hip-hop and old-soul music. While Carlos and Paul were writing seventies’ music, which progressed to the eighties, inspired by their manager and now, they are into the nineties’ music. Inspirations came from seventies’ songs from Black Sabbath, eighties’ music from Led Zeppelin and nineties’ music from Nirvana.

Their musical influences vary from local to foreign artists. Songwriter Kevin Roy is Yap’s musical influence because of his colorful, deep, poetic and dramatic, though angry writing-style. Mayor is influenced by Raymond Marasigan’s punk rock-style. For Millare, it is Dong Abay and Stevie Nicks, while Carlos is influenced by Tom Merello (Rage Against the Machine guitarist) and bands like Incubus.

Their first album, Fragmented, under independent record label Terno Recordings, has been one of 2006's critically acclaimed albums in the local music scene. They are set to release their follow-up in 2008.

The sophomore album, Bipolar, still under the same label, is set to be released on October 24, 2008. It features the current single Every First Second.
