King Kang

Since forming in the spring of 2015, King Kang has gained a loyal following in their hometown of Long Beach. Their sound, built on frontwoman Esther Kang's affinity for hypnotic guitar melodies and emotive vocals, is not easily classifiable -- their influences range from funk and bossa nova to post rock and hip hop. Kang, whose love affair with the guitar and songwriting began at age 12, met the ethereal guitarist Gino Martez at a mutual friend's salon party in early 2015, and the two subsequently formed a duo. Soon after, they were joined by bassist Matthew Proffitt, a classically-trained trombonist who also performs with the award-winning Four Larks musical, and most recently, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Serrano, who previously played drums with Panther Heart, an experimental multimedia performance collective conceived in Long Beach.
