About Cubop City Big Band
THE CUBOP CITY BIG BAND
The Cubop City Big Band founded by drummer-percussionist Lucas van Merwijk was named after the New York club ‘Cubop City’ where such legends as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Chano Pozo used to perform in the nineteen fourtees and fifties.
It currently has 7 cd’s to its name that include music by Machito (the Machito Project) Beny Moré (Moré and More) and Arsenio Rodriguez (Arsenio)
Besides Dutch musicians, the twenty-piece big band includes players from Puerto Rico, Panama, Germany, the USA and Venezuela and has collaborated with a respectable number of stars from the Latin scene that include Alfredo ‘Chocolate’ Armenteros, Edy Martinez, Andy Gonzalez (Libre, Tito Puente), Armando Peraza (Carlos Santana), Luis Conte and Nelson Gozales (Cachao, Gloria Estefan), Paul Simon). The band had several hits at radio stations in Latin America and the U.S.A (Miami, San Fransisco, Los Angeles, New York). Their cd Moré and More was number 2 on the New York Latin Beat magazine’s Best Latin Album of 1998.
