About Detraktor

1.
Can you introduce yourself, please.
Henrique Simões Queiroz - Drummer and Singer
Sunday Boris - Guitarist and Bassist
Rafael Dobbs - Guitarist and Bassist

Where are you from?
Henrique:
I was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil
My Love for music began very early when I started to listen to the music that my father and my mother were into. My father always was and is a big musical influence for me because he is also a drummer and he plays and composes amazing instrumental music. He also was my drum teacher and gave me a lot of music to hear. He motivated me to do music and fight for what I love to do.
Since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to be a musician for the rest of my life.
The first time I listened to metal was an amazing moment for me. I grew up in the same town as Sepultura. Of course my first influence for heavy music was those guys. I was listening to everything jazz, classic rock, progressive music but when a friend of mine gave me tapes with “Arise”, “Chaos AD”, Metallica and Pantera’s “Vulgar Display of Power”, for me this was the Apocalypse! I listened to this every day and so started my love for metal!
The fact that Sepultura comes from the same town, gives me a lot of inspiration and motivation to keep playing this music style.

Boris:
Born in Bulgaria, but lived in Canada for quite a long time. I moved around a bit, always looking for a place that fits. Germany is totally the way to go, right now. Been playing guitar for about 15 years now and I am always trying to play what feels right.

Rafa:
Born in Chile, I got my first classical guitar very young, I haven't stop playing the damn thing until 5 minutes ago... Right now I’m living in Hamburg, Germany. So far, the environment is perfect and the circumstances lead to start a band with people that share the same focus.

Where and when did the band meet? Is there a story?
Boris:
We found each other by pure coincidence. True love story. Actually, we just got hammered one day and got together to play. It’s been going well so far…
Rafa:
Yeah, I met with Henrique at a concert and then Boris at a famous metal bar in Hamburg. We were all kind of wasted so we really had to put a real effort on writing our numbers down so we could keep connected. I guess we wrote them down well.

Where do you live now?
ALL:
Hamburg, Germany. Hoping to be able to spread the thrash and live off it every day!

How old are you?
Boris:
Older than Henrique, that’s for sure…
Rafa:
The age of Albert Einstein when he was 33. It’s like 20 years more than Henrique.

How did everyone come to play music? What was the moment of inspiration?
Henrique:
I went to Germany playing with other bands from Brazil but the band situation made us go our separate ways . Detraktor is for me is the next level, fresh energy and a new family to write good music with!
Boris:
I think I started with the classics. I got “Kill ‘em all” around the age of 7-8 years old and instantly shat myself…
But overall, I also grew up with a lot of Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd… You know… dad’s music.
Rafa:
Nirvana and Saul Hudson

2.
What is the band's musical style!
Boris:
Traktor Thrash

What are the band's and the band members' musical influences? Name some bands, please.
Henrique:
Musical influence... A lot I think:
Sepultura, Pantera, Overkill, Exodus, Obituary and of course all the classics.
Personally I also love Meshuggah!
Boris:
Nevermore (I miss you guys…), Overkill, Slayer, Opeth, and bla bla bla… It’s like a whole book of influences. Just like any metalhead, you can’t pinpoint one exact influence.

Rafa: uff

3.
You recently released a demo.
What are the song texts are about?
Henrique:
Our songs texts are very spontaneous. We try to write something heavy but with humor inside, relating funny and darker facts of real life.

Is there are a main topic that reoccurs in sole or many songs? (For example Metallica or Bolt Thrower are often talking about war topics.)
Boris:
We are all about not taking life too seriously. There is no point in not enjoying this short trip. So we talk a lot about being yourself and not following others. And don’t spiral out of control, cause life will bite you in the ass!
Rafa:
As a new band we don’t have our concepts very clear, we write about everything. I guess time would give us some patterns and ways to do things, for now it’s just doing stuff that sounds cool. A great example is the style of the 4 songs on the demo, they are so different to each other. It’s like eating fries with ice cream on top and wine in a tea cup.

4.
What are the band's career aspirations?
Henrique:
I think all of us want to make the band as a main job and want to live with metal !
Boris:
We want to see people smash into each other when we are on stage. A lot.
Rafa:
Do the job as perfect and as good as possible, everything else comes along with it.

5.
How do you write songs?
Henrique:
The songs came out of ideas everybody brings in the jams. We play these ideas in many different forms and jam until we have the format everybody likes.
Boris:
We start playing. Sometimes, good stuff comes out of improvising. Also, beer.
Rafa:
Beer makes you pee, so every time we go out in the cold to pee, we clear our minds and make old ideas better. Ideas that everybody brings to the jam room and gives birth to something enjoyable.

6.
What equipment do you use?
Henrique:
Close to nothing. There is a lot of borrowed equipment alongside ours.
Boris:
Jackson RR1 and anything that kinda sounds like an amp… mostly Marshalls
Rafa:
I sold most of my equipment in Chile before came to Germany, I brought the essentials, which includes my beloved Gibson Custom and some pedals.

What equipment (manufacturers) would you like to use?
Henrique:
New wireless head mic (Shure or Senheiser), good drum kit (Sonor, Tama or DW), more amps, PA…
Boris:
Marshall amps.
Rafa:
I think i have a pretty good idea of what I want. but right know is not urgent, we can destroy with what we have. I know that is a constant searching of the right tones.
