Backland

Formerly known as Lucky 13 but renamed Backland after a renewal in 2016.

The band from Emmeloord was founded when Henrik Borneman and Joris Oosterhof wanted to start a band.
With Arnoud Mijnheer on second guitar and eventually, Laurens de Graaff on bass, the band was formed quickly.
Since all members of the band where thirteen years old at the time, they decided to name themselves Lucky 13.
They performed in and around the Noordoostpolder and even outside the province of Flevoland.

Some time passed and they caught the attention of the former Muzisch Centrum (now named Cultuurbedrijf Noordoostpolder), where they were placed under the watchful eye of
Piet Hein Appelo, who would be their coach and the person to record their songs in the Cultuurbedrijf’s studio.

After Joris Oosterhof left the band to focus on his studies, it was Guido Mulder who took over the drums.
Later, also Arnoud Mijnheer left the group and in 2014, Jelle Dittmar took his place, replacing the second guitar with keys.
In 2015, Hendrik Borneman left and Nynke Dittmar became the lead vocalist.
All the band needed now, was a guitarist. Harmen Verheij, one of Piet Hein’s students, would take up this task.
Later that year, Olivier Pals joined the group to play the guitar and sing. He left a few months after.

Laurens de Graaff was the only member of the original band, and so the group decided to rename themselves Backland. The name refers to the land behind the dikes of the former Zuiderzee; the Noordoostpolder.
Eventually, Laurens also left in favor of his studies, and the talented Kaylee Meinders took his place.

Backland has released various singles through the years, the first one being Abandoned (2015), performed in De Klos in Emmeloord. Taking It Down (2016) was the band’s first song to be sold on CD. Their third single Hide (2017), was originally made for the theater department of the Cultuurbedrijf

After earning second place at the preliminary of the contest Flavourland in Lelystad and winning the Battle of the Bands 2016 in Emmeloord during the local Popnight, the band made the decision to begin putting together their first full length album.

With the free recording time in the Cultuurbedrijf’s studio won by placing first in the Battle of the Bands, the band recorded the debut album in April 2017.

Voormalig bekend als Lucky 13 maar na een doorstart in 2016 omgedoopt tot Backland.

De band uit Emmeloord ontstond toen Hendrik Borneman en Joris Oosterhof een bandje wilde beginnen.
Met Arnoud Mijnheer op tweede gitaar en uiteindelijk Laurens de Graaff op de bass, was de band snel gevormd.
Omdat alle bandleden destijds 13 jaar waren hebben zij de naam Lucky 13 bedacht.
Zij traden veel op in en om de Noordoostpolder en zelfs een paar keer buiten Flevoland.

Zij trokken naarmate de tijd verstreek de aandacht van het Cultuurbedrijf (voormalig Muzisch Centrum), en werden daarom al gauw onder de hoede van Piet Hein Appelo geplaatst als bandcoach die al hun nummers opneemt in de studio van het bedrijf.

Nadat Joris Oosterhof de band verliet voor zijn studie, nam Guido Mulder letterlijk het stokje van de drums over.
Hierna vertrok ook Arnoud Mijnheer en kwam daar in 2014 Jelle Dittmar
voor in de plaats op de toetsen.
In 2015 vertrok ook Hendrik Borneman en nam Nynke Dittmar de verantwoordelijkheid van de zang op zich.
Ook miste ze nog een gitarist, dit werd Harmen Verheij, ook een leerling van Piet Hein Appelo.
In dat zelfde jaar kwam Olivier Pals ook bij de groep voor tweede gitaar en zang, Hij verliet de groep een paar maanden daarna.

Omdat alleen Laurens de Graaf het enige oorspronkelijke lid van Lucky 13 was, besloot de band zich te hernoemen tot Backland.
De betekenis slaat op het land achter de dijken van wat vroeger de Zuiderzee was; de Noordoostpolder

Uiteindelijk vertrok ook Laurens voor zijn studie en zijn vervanger voor de bass werd de getalenteerde Kaylee Meinders.

Backland heeft in de loop van tijd verschillende singles uitgebracht, hun eerste single Abandoned (2015), werd voor het eerst vertoond in De Klos in Emmeloord
Taking It Down (2016) was het eerste nummer van de band dat werd uitgebracht op CD.
Hun derde single was Hide (2017), oorspronkelijk geschreven voor de theatergroep van het Cultuurbedrijf.

Na tweede te zijn geworden tijdens de Lelystadse voorronde van Flevourland, en het winnen van de Battle of the Bands van 2016 in Emmeloord tijdens de lokale Popnight, besloot de band om hun eerste full length album te maken.

Met de gratis studio tijd die ze hadden gewonnen tijdens de Battle of the Bands, namen ze in April van 2017 hun debuut album op.
