About Gypsyfingers
Gypsyfingers are an ethereal folk-rock band founded by Victoria and Luke Oldfield (son of Mike Oldfield). Victoria's classical training and love of dance music fuses with Luke's folk and rock background to create a fresh sound of their own lauded by R2 Magazine as "trip-hop and folk-influenced ethereal pop that delightfully doesn't fit into any existing musical pigeonhole".
Multi-instrumentalists Victoria Coghlan & Luke Oldfield met in 2011 after Victoria returned from Paris to her home town, London. Whilst living in Paris Victoria discovered underground gipsy, dance and rap music scenes. She immersed herself in these new sounds, blending them together with her classical and choral musical background. Victoria's bedroom-recorded demo tapes, with their fusion of diverse influences, found their way to Luke in London and so the collaboration of GypsyFingers began.
Luke is a producer, songwriter and musician who runs Tilehouse Studios in London, where his father Mike Oldfield recorded in the 1980's. Gypsyfingers' debut album was the first album to be recorded at Tilehouse Studios since 1987. Luke engineers at analogue studios in London including Toe Rag Studios where Luke co-engineered Metronomy’s album Love Letters and also played lead guitar on the opening track of the same record. Luke played guitar at the spectacular London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony in Mike Oldfield’s band in front of a live audience of 80,000 in the Olympic Stadium and a television audience of over 1 billion.
Gypsyfingers recorded their debut album, 'Circus Life', in typically unconventional fashion at Tilehouse Studios, a studio built for Luke’s father Mike Oldfield which specialises in vintage recording equipment including analogue tape machines. Victoria and Luke played most of the instruments themselves. The idea behind the album was to be unrestrained and experiment with arrangements, instruments and different styles in order to create interesting and fresh sounding recordings. As there was no record label involved in the funding of the album GypsyFingers were able to be creative and find their own sound. The songs on the album explore various aspects of modern life. The album title 'Circus Life' is taken from the lyrics of 'Circus Elephant' - "My circus life is just for you". The album was hailed for its originality on release in 2014.
After the release of their debut album Gypsyfingers were invited to open for James Blunt in Warsaw, which led to a three-week tour of Poland in 2015. Having won plaudits from the press for their support slot on the Tubular Bells For Two tour in 2017, and following fantastic performances at Isle of Wight Festival and at Hyde Park BST opening for Van Morrison and Michael Bublé this summer, the band will be touring the UK in November to promote the release of their second studio album. Gypsyfingers perform live as a multi-instrumental quartet with Victoria on piano, French horn, guitars and vocals, Luke on guitars and vocals playing live shows described as "fully immersive and entertaining; seductive and beautiful in equal measure” (Mumble Music, Edinburgh Queens Hall, 1st Oct 2017)
