About Frigo

Frigo is an electro-rock trio band based in Rennes (France). Evolving in an off-centre modern electropop, where nothing's really fixed as every track seems to be made of 5 other ones, Frigo studiously build a musical puzzle made of simplicity, efficiency and sobriety as shown by the artwork on the EP & LP sleeves. The band makes ingenuity & minimalism compete. Bright melodies, crystal-like guitar, hypnotic drums, outerspace keyboards + electronica, nearly-dark atmosphere & strange voices give Frigo a unique sound, while some critics may still occasionally evoke somes influences, going from the ghostly eighties sounds of Joy Division, The Cure and Kraftwerk to more actual rock bands such as Radiohead, Trans Am, The Notwist and Boards of Canada.

Without any promotion, Frigo's debut Ep “XYZ” (2002) is greeted with enthusiasm by the press (many tracks appears on magazine samplers) and songs are played by many big indie French radios....In the months following XYZ, Frigo takes part in some famous festivals :Vieilles Charrues (with the Cure), Transmusicales (Rennes), Printemps de Bourges. The trio plays many gigs and supports Interpol, Chokebore and Lali Puna on tour...In June 2003, Frigo signs of a contract with DBM/Wagram.

The trio records a 2nd Ep, "Teleportation" (2003). This Ep is more ambitious than its predecessor, complex yet accessible thanks to its melodic effectiveness, as heard in the single "Dressed to succeed" which becomes first on the the French indie radio stations playlist on January 2004. Praised by the press (Liberation, Rolling Stones, Rock Sound, Rock Mag, ….), Frigo is designed by some critics as the “indie revelation of 2004”. Frigo gigs become more intense as the band tours all over the France, and shares the stage with Blonde Redhead, Tarwater, Venus, Q and not U, Pere Ubu …

2005 is spent composing the first album, “Funambul”. With five years of expertise under their belts, Frigo is creating more daring, intense, melancholic, sensual but still rock compositions. The trio initiates some new collaborations with Troy Von Balthazar (Chokebore), Scott Mc Cloud (Girls Against Boys) & the String Machine (strings for Brigitte Fontaine and Jacques Higelin). The excellent German producer Mario Thaler (The Notwist, Console, Lali Puna, Ms John Soda, …) mixes the Lp.

“Funambul” is released on May 2006 and comes with a beautiful dreamlike artwork in a massive digipack format. This album is more human than its predecessor and develops its troubling beauty within wide-open sound spaces. Composed with astonishing maturity and as solid a sense of melody as ever, the pieces take the time to breathe, allow themselves digressions, create their spatial, heady atmospheres through time, envelop the mind in long. Tracks are mountains of strain ready to collapse at any time, penetrating voice that will chase yours at the first occasion.
