Martin Van De Vrugt

Martin van de Vrugt (Deventer, 1963) is meer dan een singer-songwriter alleen: sinds 1980 schrijft en speelt hij zijn eigen nummers, zich zelf begeleidend op akoestische gitaren en harmonica. Hij deelt regelmatig het podium met andere artiesten waaronder PennyLeen, Enrico Berretta, Iris Rijnsewijn, Mischa Lelieveld, Marijn Wijnands (Marain), Rosa Sky, Martin Korthuis & Band en Marten de Paepe, de Amerikaanse Shane Alexander, Jessica Kilroy en Karyn Oliver, de Canadese songstress Orit Shimoni, het Australisch/Franse duo Kenna & Cox en met de Engelse singer-songwriter Emma Black.
In zijn jeugd geïnspireerd door o.a. Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell en Neil Young maar later ook de traditionele (Amerikaanse) folk, country, jazz en blues begon Martin in 1980 als straatmuzikant en werkte zich op naar vele kleine en grotere podia in Nederland en daarbuiten.
Zijn shows zijn afwisselend dynamisch en verstild, zijn liedjes ontroeren, niet in de allerlaatste plaats omdat Martin feilloos zijn visie op gevoelens over de wereld en zichzelf weet te vangen en weet om te zetten in mooie teksten en tijdloze muziek.

Martin heeft zijn eigen huisstudio waar hij voor zichzelf maar, als producer ook met andere independent artiesten al prachtige cd's opnam. Zijn cd 'Road to Rapture' die in 2009 uitkwam kreeg zeer goede recensies. Het integere en indrukwekkende openingsnummer 'Leave a light On' werd door de Dutch Country Association uit honderden songs gekozen om Nederlandse country (en aanverwante) muziek te promoten in het buitenland en verscheen, ook als openingsnummer, op de 2010 verzamel-cd van de Olon.
Hieruit zou geconstateerd kunnen worden dat Martin's muziek in het hokje 'country' gestopt moet worden. Niets is minder waar: zijn liedjes zijn niet onder een noemer te vangen en spreken een groot en divers publiek aan.

In mei 2013 is zijn zesde soloalbum "Fall from Grace" uitgekomen met daarop elf zeer persoonlijke nummers. Het album is een weerslag van een aantal moeilijke jaren die Martin in zijn persoonlijk leven moest doormaken. Pijnlijk direct en intiem...

Martin of Vrugt (Deventer, 1963) is more than just a singer-songwriter: Writing and playing his own songs since 1980, accompanying himself on acoustic guitars and harmonica. He regularly shares the stage with other artists including PennyLeen, Enrico Berretta, Iris Rijnsewijn, Mischa Lelieveld, Marijn Wijnands (Marain), Rosa Sky, Martin Korthuis & Band and Marten de Paepe, the American singer/songwriters Shane Alexander, Jessica Kilroy and Karyn Oliver, the Canadian songstress Orit Shimoni, the Australian / French duo Kenna & Cox and the English singer-songwriters Emma Black and Ian Britt. In his youth especially inspired by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young but later also the traditional (American) folk, country, jazz and blues Martin began as a street musician in the early eighties and worked his way up to many small and large venues in the Netherlands and abroad. His shows are alternately dynamic and silent, his songs move because Martin flawlessly captures his vision of the world and his own little spot in it and blends that into beautiful lyrics and timeless music. Martin has his own home studio where he recorded excellent CDs for himself but, as a producer, also with other independent artists. His CD "Road to Rapture" which was released in 2009, received very good reviews. The heartfelt and impressive opening track 'Leave a Light On " was chosen from hundreds of songs to promote Dutch Country Music and appeared as opening track on the 2010 compilation CD of Olon Dutch Country (and related) Music by the Dutch Country Music Association. It might seem that Martin's music should be put in the box 'Country music' but nothing is further from the truth. His songs are not easy to catch and appeal to a wide and diverse audience. In May 2013, his sixth solo album "Fall from Grace" was released containing eleven very personal songs. The album is a reflection of a couple of difficult years that Martin had to go through in his personal life.
