About Tarrant

Tarrant found his appreciation for words and music early on in life. Raised by a family of guitar players listening and playing along to the music of renowned songwriters, Austin native Tarrant shares that he’s always written songs, and assumed that was something everyone did. It was in the narratives of wordsmiths like John Prine, Townes Van Zandt and Warren Zion that Jordan found his love for storytelling and composition. Lead singer/guitarist/primary songwriter Jordan grew up in Texas and has been making music and recording since his teens. After his time at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music he moved to Richmond VA and put together Lazarus, his first studio album. The album was recorded at Virginia Moonwalker, with friend and producer Russell Lacy. This collaboration laid the foundation for the band Tarrant is today. The band that bears Jordan's surname organically coalesced from the "great players in this town," he enthuses, after he began performing with Lacy in Richmond clubs and through the sessions for Lazarus. Currently the band is recording its second studio album at Richmond Virginia’s Montrose Recording Studio with local hero, Adrian Olsen a former member of the band and excellent engineer/producer. Bassist Zachary Hudgins has been involved with Richmond music for the past 15 years playing in Richmond staple bands like Red Light Rodeo, Jackass Flats, and formerly The Southern Belles along side Pedal Steel player Stephen Kuester, a veteran of the seen, master of his craft and founding member of Jackass Flats. New drummer Andrew Sisk of Angelica Garcia and founding member of Dalton Dash, a staple in the VA Scene makes a tremendous addition to the band. Rounding out the line-up is auxiliary member Craig Harmon playing Hammond B-3, Wurlitzer and steel guitar as he's done in the studio and onstage with Cracker, Tift Merritt, Joan Osborne, John Doe, Caitlin Cary and others. Craig adds southern spice with his brilliant story telling and complimentary keys. As a genuine band, everyone adds their creative contributions and touches to Tarrant's wide ranging material and sultry sound. Richmond.com notes, "The lyrics are up front... rattling off a good story interlaced with some melodic guitar parts here and rockin' grooves there. It's fun, hard driving... pretty at times." At first play, Jordan’s songwriting reminds listeners of traditional blues and folk writers-- the songs often nod to the classic styles of old western and blues icons. Upon further listening, one identifies it’s modern twists, melodic acoustic guitar riffs, sharp witticisms and energetic vocal performance. Jordan’s songs are both refreshing and comforting. They are intelligently crafted, meaningful lyrics that are also satisfying in their rootsy familiarity. Texas-Virginia RR Music Alt Country / Americana / Roots
