About Mahir Can Küçük
Mahir Can Küçük was born in Denizli, Turkey in 1992. He received his first degree in Industrial Design, Architecture Faculty in İstanbul on 2014. He got his former training as a vocalist while he was in İstanbul, by Timur Selçuk (well known composer, vocalist, conductor, pianist) and Randy Esen (a prominent Jazz vocalist. He is mostly self-taught in jazz and classical harmony, worked on ear training and learned to arrange music by working on his projects on digital audio workstations before being enrolled at Berklee.
Since the beginning of his studies at Berklee, he has worked with more than twenty Berklee students on his own compositions, arranging and producing for various Berklee songwriters. He wrote for and performed his Turkish classical-influenced piece, "İstanbul," at Berklee's Mediterranean Music Institute annual concert at 2015. His piece "Gentle Testosterone" was chosen to be performed at the Berklee Contemporary Writing and Production department student 2016 concert (March 3rd) at Berklee's largest concert hall, the Berklee Performance Center. Mahir will also perform at the Berklee International Folk Music Festival (March 24th, BPC), where he'll lead the music of Turkey section. His arrangements has been performed by Berklee ensembles including Qantara,Contemporary Middle Eastern, and Middle Eastern Fusion. "The Çay Party", Mahir's own band, has performed two on-campus recitals which gained great reaction. Additionally, he has represented Berklee and Turkish music at several different Northeastern University festivals since February 2015.
Besides being a writer, arranger and producer, Mahir is a vocalist who features Western contemporary music, Turkish classical, traditional and contemporary music in his repertoire. He is able to sing microtonally, with knowledge of Turkish and Egyptian microtonal tradition. He plays bass guitar, piano, guitar, and hand percussion. He believes creativity is enriched by experiencing nature and human relationships.
