Amazing!!!

What a wonderful night ! I had seen the Maccabees last summer, at the beginning of this world tour. And guess what ? They never seem fatigued or jaded like other artists would. In fact, one of the things that makes them so relevant is their ability to breathe something fresh and genuine into every one of their shows. Very few bands possess their elegance and grace that they have, because despite being a critically acclaimed, successful act they seem to remain humble and grateful no matter what. And it shows. The Maccabees never overplay, cutting the crap to reveal only the best they have. They are never self-indulgent, highlighting the romance in everyday life without trying to make the ordinary extraordinary. Unlike other self-proclaimed “indie” bands from these past ten years, they do not try to apply a proven formula and sit back, they do not play a game of smoke and mirrors to make up for having nothing to say. They managed to be modern and completely relevant. Lyrics are poetic yet unpretentious, melodies are beautifully crafted to an astonishingly high standard. I’ve rarely seen a crowd so easily moved : we were all successively euphoric, nostalgic, hopeful, angry, sad (but it was never soppy) and feeling emotions I can’t find words for. When the lights dimmed only to reveal guitarist Hugo White singing his song about his late mother, it nearly damn well brought me to tears (which would have been a first). It wasn’t whiney and attention-seeking in any way, it was dignified and beautiful. This song was like a lump in my throat that swelled and rolled, before finally being soothed and deflating.We danced, jumped, sang, screamed and did other things without even realising, because of how far away the band carried us. The pace ebbed and flowed without ever slackening, steadily building up into something enormous. By the time they had disappeared backstage before the encore, we were singing all together, our voices echoing throughout the whole academy. I know this review sounds a bit too enthusiastic, maybe not critical enough, but I can assure that everyone was genuinely taken aback by the quality of the show. It was clever and flawless, but not overly polished. And if I had to choose one corny word to describe the whole experience, it’d be beautiful : the lights, the venue, the music, the musicians (a few ladies were spotted sighing in the front row).If I had the time and money, I would buy tickets for tonight and tomorrow. I will remember this night all my life as one of the most vivid, emotionally and musically satisfying moments of my existence. If anyone ever gets ahold of the band, please express my infinite gratitude to them.
