About Luke Roberts
Luke Roberts is an American singer and songwriter. Roberts was born in Nashville, Tennessee.
Roberts' first album Big Bells and Dime Songs, was released in 2010 by Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace Records, and later released by the label Thrill Jockey. Pitchfork Media calls the album "fiercely internal, and remarkably hard to shake"... "Roberts' vocals are tender and bruised, and their smallness can be legitimately heartbreaking." Acoustic Guitar says, "Luke Roberts is a poet..." The video for "Unspotted Clothes" was directed by James Clauer and is featured as a staff favorite on Vimeo. The album was mixed by Kyle Spence of Harvey Milk. The cover features a photo by Justine Kurland.
Roberts' second album "The Iron Gates at Throop and Newport was recorded in Nashville by Marky Nevers and mixed by Kyle Spence of Harvey Milk. Backing vocals provided by Emily Sundblad. Also released by Thrill Jockey, a label the Chicago Tribune calls "One of the Indie Music Labels that Matter".
Filter Magazine says Roberts' work "conjures up the medicated hayseed jams as done by folks like Palace and Silver Jews."
Metromix calls his work "a small masterpiece of melancholy restraint.” Thurston Moore says,"Luke Roberts voice evokes both the great and lonesome Pacific Rail and the wild heart of the Brooklyn J/Z line".
