About Rhona Macfarlane

Scottish Singer/Songwriter Rhona Macfarlane, from the seaside town of Montrose, has the spirit of folk music running through her blood. With ancestors hailing from the remote Scottish Islands of Harris and St Kilda and growing up around the records of Joni Mitchell, John Martyn and Nick Drake it is no wonder she has been described as someone who “has the soul of someone years beyond her age”. Macfarlane holds the folk heritage of storytelling at the heart of her music but delivers it in a modern light. Embracing vulnerability and introspection, Macfarlane invites audiences on a journey of self-discovery and reflection through conveying the deepest of human emotions through her own experiences, emotions, and personal growth. Her “emotional and reflective storytelling” has been described as “casting a gentle spell over her audience” fostering a sense of shared experience and human connection. As a multi-instrumentalist she consistently makes an impact on audiences with her intricate and melodic writing. With a love of both classical and folk music, the two worlds collide creating an evocative musical landscape that has been described as “building an atmosphere of tranquillity and respite.”

Rhona released her last EP ‘Closing the Window’ in November 2021. Produced by Matt Ingram (credits Laura Marling), the EP is a collection of songs inspired by a time of inward reflection and solitude during the pandemic. A time when family and friend ties were cut and sharing music was limited.

The first single ‘Better When You’re Around’ was selected as record of the week on the BBC Radio Scotland Afternoon Show and other tracks from the EP have also had extensive radio play on numerous BBC Shows such as The Roddy Hart Show, Travelling Folk and the Iain Anderson Show. Press includes support from The Daily Record, Folk Radio UK (song of the day), Americana UK, Indie Music Center, The Herald (top 100 tunes from Scotland) and Right Chord Music. She was also selected as one of the top 5 artists for the March 2022 Unsigned Guide Spotlight. Rhona’s live talent has resulted in support slots for a range of artists such as Josh Rouse, Rory Butler, Nell Bryden, Chloe Foy, Lizzie Reid, Sinderins, Martha Reeves, a mini tour with The Sound of Sirens and performances at Celtic Connections, Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Eden Fest and Esk Fest. As a live performer Rhona has been grabbing attention and in 2023 supported the award-winning singer Josienne Clarke at Union Chapel, London.
