About Earth's Yellow Sun

Earth's Yellow Sun is an instrumental progressive metal band hailing from Toronto, Canada with an innovative and unique approach to modern progressive music. Their sophomore release, The Infernal Machine, is a concept record that tells the story of a futuristic society’s dependence on technology, and the ensuing struggle between human and machine for survival. The creation of this EP pushed EYS into more experimental territory, incorporating unconventional instrumentation into their sound, as horns, violin, choir, tabla, and more were used in order to bring the dramatic narrative to life. The Infernal Machine was released in the summer of 2015 to very positive reviews, and the band is now gearing up to bring its music to the live stage.

Earth's Yellow Sun was co-founded by guitarist Josh Hanff and drummer Julien Bigras while attending Humber College’s music program. The duo quickly hit it off due to their shared musical influences, and once they started jamming together regularly, they recruited Duncan Stan to join them on bass. Over the 2013-2014 school year, the trio kept busy writing and recording their debut EP, Prologue, while simultaneously running the “Humber Progressive Ensemble”, a student-run ensemble that would create and perform modern progressive metal. With the addition of Michael Murray on guitar, Gio Campanelli on keys, and a trio of saxophones, this was the first ensemble of its kind at Humber College. Playing music by the bands that had influenced Josh and Julien, such as Animals as Leaders and Tesseract, as well as composing and performing some original material, gave the group a chance to tighten up and hone its sound. This was where the band first experimented with the idea of using a three-piece saxophone section in a progressive metal context. After refining the concept through the writing/recording process for The Infernal Machine, EYS began rearranging the Prologue material for the horns. Murray Heaton, Brian Dhari and Savic Panylyk quickly jumped on board to bring the music that they recorded to life, as the EYS sax section.

With their sights firmly set on the live stage, Earth’s Yellow Sun is quickly gaining momentum, and is poised to jump right into the modern progressive metal scene with a sound and approach that is unique in the genre. So keep your eyes peeled, as EYS will soon be hitting a venue near you!
