About Boss 501

Boss 501 is a passionate group of musicians brought together by their shared love of the traditional sounds of Jamaica. Boss 501 began when the Esco Chris left Southern California and moved to Chico. Originally playing guitar, Esco Chris has upgraded their sound by playing organ. Powered by reggae music, he met up with Nick Danty, singer, saxophonist and reggae enthusiast, online, and set up a small jam session. Ben Stone, bassist and long-time friend and musical collaborator of Nick's joined the crew shortly there-after, bringing the needed low end. Danny Walcoff was sourced through a network of friends, and brought his drumming into the mix. Reggae fever struck, and the need to expand the horn section brought Charlie Francis, with his trombone and golden voice to Boss 501. Brian Matisek, another long-time friend of Nick and Ben, was recruited for authentic rhythm guitar. Finally, Pat Mack, was brought on board to help ease the double load of our singing horn players, and the full sound of Boss 501 was realized. Boss 501 brings a sound that is uniquely their own, though it clearly draws very heavily upon early reggae music as its basis. Boss 501 is also significantly influenced by Skinhead reggae, traditional Jamaican ska, as well as dub music. Boss 501 is a contemporary band, however, and acknowledges that they have also been influenced by 2-tone music and punk rock, as well as American soul and jazz, and every sound that has entered their ears. Boss 501 has thrilled audiences in venues large and small, and has been fortunate enough to perform with acts including The Wailers, Derrick Harriott, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Roy Ellis, The Aggrolites, The English Beat, The Slackers, Chris Murray, Deals Gone Bad, Go Jimmy Go, See Spot, The Impalers, and Debonaires. The members of Boss 501 bring extensive experience in the Jamaican styles, having performed in numerous groups prior to forming Boss 501, including The Pedaltones, One Big Step, The Titans, and The Allentons. www.boss501.com
