About The Long Goodbye

The Long Goodbye is led by Alfie Bernardi, a singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist.
His lyrics have been described as "haunting, introspective, and painfully real" and his voice as "Impossibly filled with emotion".
After a successful career as a sideman in several bands, Alfie moved to the country and worked on a solo album. Released in 2008, ‘Whenever in ruins’ was hailed by many as "the album to play when the whisky comes out" and "a fine collection of heartfelt songs, and the most evocative voice since Counting Crows' Adam Duritz".
‘Darkness Leaves’ followed in 2010, with denser sound textures and arrangements, while 2012's ‘Fractures’ was a more intimate record, with Alfie playing most of the instruments around his original one-take versions of the songs.
‘Swan Songs’ was released in 2016 and still stands as the band’s finest album, featuring live favourites ‘Thinking Of Esther’ and ‘Still The Best Thing’.
The latest album ‘Wait Another Day’, released 2018 is a return to their stripped down acoustic format. Taking a step back and focusing on capturing the moment, the songs were recorded in very few takes and the instrumentation kept to a minimum. A pensive, reflecting mood dominates, with echoes of past and present experiences, hopes, and sorrows, all accentuated by immediate, hushed vocal delivery and inventive arrangements.
On December 9th 2019 The Long Goodbye will release “Selected Tracks 2008-2018”, a double album collection of songs from their first 5 albums plus 3 previously unreleased tracks.

“A beautifully put together record, file next to Wilco and Sufjan Stevens” XYZ MAGAZINE, BRIGHTON
“The Long Goodbye take the reins with a mesmeric slab of atmospheric Americana inspired Indie complete with hushed, reflective vocals, urging the listener to hear more” SLAP MAG, BIRMINGHAM
“The doors slowly fed through a handful of folk at a time until a reasonable audience were set to hear the incredible songwriting talent of Alfie Bernardi of The Long Goodbye who set the tone of the evening by demonstrating the emotive power of simplicity” THE SONIC REVERIE, NOTTINGHAM
"I really like this track because it is doing stuff in a very different way, which, when you listen to a lot of music in a very concentrated fashion, makes for a refreshing change." PHIL JACKSON, BBC SOUTHERN COUNTIES RADIO.
"All of their songs are self written and are of a consistently high standard. They are gifted musicians, with a style close to 1970's era country rock but with a modern edge. A band to keep an eye on!" MIKE MORRISON, MAVERICK MAGAZINE.
"I really liked it. There is a fusion of very different things in there. I like the relaxed approach and it's kind of perfect for a rainy day." PAUL MEX, MEX ONE RECORDINGS. (Robert Wyatt, Wham etc.).
"Alfie delivers a hardline lesson in melancholia via his beautiful voice; an instrument drenched in a deep understanding of matters-of-the-heart, his guitar expertly manipulated to tease-out the most ravishing accompaniment across songs that will move you in every way imaginable." NICK HUDSON, THE ACADEMY OF SUN.
