About Booyaka

Booyaka is a funky legend, a non-stop party, a musical mantra, a way of life. Retro yet forward-looking, danceably funky but rockingly filthy dirty, Booyaka's individual groove has never been more vital. After more than a decade of gigging Booyaka remains Shropshire's premier funk band. A true inspiration for past and present generations of misspent youths, these funk-rock heroes have genuinely changed the musical landscape to create the funkiest county you've never heard of. Seriously, ask Max Rafferty of the Kooks. We taught him everything he knows. Almost. After literally hundreds of gigs, a continental tour, support for the likes of Jah Wobble, Transglobal Underground and Ozric Tentacles, battle-of-the-bands victories, headline festival slots, and one botched record deal, Booyaka have returned after a three year hiatus, and are still filling venues with their loyal and frankly demented fans. Check them out at a festival near you. Keen as mustard! Press cuttings : Ryan's Gig Guide said: "There are times when this job really sucks.. a crap band, expensive shit beer, and suddenly you're having one of the worst nights of your life. I'm glad to say that this wasn't one of them. Booyaka....bounced onto the stage and grooved, and grooved, and grooved...you get the picture?....Tight rhythmns, funky basslines and some superb guitar work, had the front rows boogieing down with a vengeance...Pretty much every song they played in their 75 minute set had a hook riff...The man from Del Monte says 'yes' " : 31 Days in Shropshire said: " Acid Voodoo Funk Warriors Booyaka have taken the local scene by storm with their head on tight groove. Described as a cross between Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Jimi Hendrix their original fusion has tickled a whole new generation's Funk Glands!" and "Shropshire's premier funk band." : Improvisation Nation said: "These folk from Midlands, UK, came to us from a solicitation I made on REVERBNATION... there are no mirrors associated with the excellent funk'n'rock they perform, & the band is tight as a drum-head, no doubt! Members listed are Jim Streets: Guitar * Matt The Ox Wright: Vocals and Trumpet * Drums: Tom Vallings * Bass: Paul (Mr P) Wright, & the kind of music they're playing hearkens back to the late '70's & early '80's, albeit with a solid dose of 21st century as a component. It's the "EQ" (my measurement for ENERGY, or "energy quotient) that first caught my ears in their sonic web... they get a 5.00 - the highest on the scale! Their self-described aura is "rockingly, filthy dirty", & I can guarantee you won't find any band more on the "jaded" side o' 'da phunk than this one! What it's like is kinda' "Parliament revived"... & I'm not talkin' 'bout that stolid body on Downing... these guys just RAWK - hail, they MUST, they got a top EQ rating from my ears! My favorite track on the CD was "Funk A Little More", in many ways because of the strong horns on the tune... each & every tune on this fantastic CD will get you outta' your phonk-ee state, though, & get you up & MOVIN' about! This is truly one of the best discoveries I've made yet this year - absolutely killer talent with spirit you won't find anywhere else - they get a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from these funk-i-fied ol' aural appendages, as well as the "PICK" of this issue for "best funk band"! Get more information at www.reverbnation.com/booyaka# & be sure you tell them that Zzaj sent you their way! " : Shropshire Star 14/08/98 "Rock band win region's main prize" 5.
