About Dream

There is more than one group with this name

1) dream/DRM/Dream is a Japanese girl group

In 1999 avex organized a talent contest called avex dream 2000. 3 girls, Matsumuro Mai (松室麻衣), Tachibana Kana (橘佳奈) and Hasebe Yu (長谷部優), won the audition and they became the group dream. The group debuted on January 1, 2000, with the single Movin’ on, which made it into the Oricon top 15 with a mature image and non-cheesy eurobeats. Their next few singles all ended up in the same territory, failing to break the top 10 until their sixth single, My Will, made it to #6 at the end of 2000 (though their next single peaked at #36). Things were considered more or less over for the group when Mai, who wrote most of their song lyrics, decided to leave the group in 2002. avex decided to hold more auditions for a replacement, but ended up with 6 new girls, though many saw this as an attempt to emulate the success of top girl-group Morning Musume. The new 8-girl group “re-debuted” in 2003 with MUSIC IS MY THING. Currently, the group is down to 7 members, following Ai Risa’s graduation to solo work in March of 2004.

On June 27th, 2007, dream was “reborn” as the dance/chorus group DRM in an attempt to shed their image as idols.
On July 22, 2008, DRM’s official website made several news announcements: the group was changing its name to Dream following the departure of Hasebe and the group’s official fan club, Live your dreams was closing.

Information:
dream First Generation

The winners of the avex dream 2000 contest, Hasebe Yu, Matsumuro Mai and Tachibana Kana debuted as dream on January 1, 2000, with the single Movin' on. The single featured commercial tie-ins with McDonald's, NTT DoCoMo and Sukiyaki!! London Boots Daisakusen, and reached the Oricon top 15. Within the first year of their debut the group had released six singles and one concept album, with the heavy eurobeat/dance style of Movin' On continuing to feature heavily in most of these releases. dream’s next few singles charted in similar territory as their first, with the group not breaking into the Oricon top 10 until the release of their sixth single, My Will on November 29, 2000. Written by Matsumuro Mai, who wrote most of the group’s lyrics since the release of Reality, My Will reached #6 position on the Oricon charts, with the title track used as the first ending theme to the Inu Yasha (犬夜叉) anime.

Dear..., dream’s first original album and the group’s seventh single, Believe in You, were both released on February 28, 2001. Unlike the success of earlier releases, Believe in You fared relatively poorly (#36 on the charts), most likely due to the fact that sales were cannibalised by the release of the album on the same day. In addition to lyrics written by Matsumuro and dream’s earlier songwriters, the album featured the first lyrics written by the other members of the group, Tachibana (track #2, FREE AS THE WIND) and Hasebe (track #15, Kimi to Ita Sora (君といた空 ; The Sky and You)). Five more singles followed the release of Dear... in 2001, with the title track from the group’s 11th single, Get Over, used as first opening theme to the Hikaru no Go (ヒカルの碁) anime.

dream's second album, Process was released on February 14, 2002 and again featured songs written by Matsumuro, with a contribution each from Hasebe and Tachibana. However unlike Dear..., these contributions were recorded and later performed as individual solos; New Days (track #5) by Tachibana, Precious Heart (track #7) by Hasebe and 「NeverMore」 (track #9) by Matsumuro. Process was to be the original, ‘first generation’ dream’s last album with the announcement in June that Matsumuro was leaving the group following her graduation from high school, and intention to pursue a solo music career. On June 10, 2002, dream released its 13th single, SINCERELY -ever dream-, the title track was a reworking of sincerely from Dear... and was used as the third ending theme to the Hikaru no Go anime. The single was Matsumuro’s last and following a final performance for the dream live 2002 “Process” on June 23, 2002 at Shibuya-AX, Matsumuro ‘graduated’ from dream. On June 26, avex released eternal dream, a two-disc compilation album with a ‘best of’ compilation on disc one featuring tracks selected by fans through an online poll, and a continuous mix on disc two.

dream Second Generation

Rather than disbanding dream, avex held more auditions for Matsumuro’s replacement but ended up adding six new girls to the group. The addition of six fourteen year olds, Ai Risa, Abe Erie, Takamoto Aya, Nakashima Ami, Nishida Shizuka and Yamamoto Sayaka, drew comparisons with Morning Musume, another successful girl group. The new eight member, ‘second generation’ dream ‘redebuted’ in February 2003 with MUSIC IS MY THING, which featured another commercial tie in with the Hikaru no Go anime. An album, dream world which contained covers of songs from the 1980s and 1990s, followed on February 25.

On March 9, 2004, second generation member Ai Risa announced that she was leaving dream to pursue a solo career.[8] Ai was not replaced which brought the group's line up down to seven girls. As a seven-member group, dream primarily released cover albums, covering songs by the original dream and other avex artists until the mini-album was settled on as their standard medium for releasing new material.

Since 2005, dream and its members’ activities has expanded into other areas: the group competes as TEAM dream (with Takamoto Aya as captain) in the futsal Sphere League and several members have build up solo careers, with Hasebe Yu and Yamamoto Sayaka having the most prolific body of work. Hasebe has worked as an actress and gravure idol whilst Yamamoto has released several solo mini-albums. Hence, the musical output by dream has slowed since 2005 due to the group’s members pursuing individual activities.

Dream to DRM

On June 27, 2007, dream’s official website announced that the group has changed its name to DRM and they released a mini-album of the same name on the same day. No further releases were made by the group until the release of four digital singles on the seventh day of every month in the first four months of 2008.

On July 22, 2008, another series of announcement were made on the DRM’s website: Hasebe, an original member of the group, was leaving DRM to pursue a solo career centered on acting, and the group would be partly reverting its former name but now with a capitalized ‘d’, becoming Dream. On the same day, it was also announced that Live your dreams, the group’s official fan club, was closing. The group’s new website was launched on August 1, 2008 but no other new activities have been announced.

Anime Themes

dream is partly known by the English-speaking population for doing the theme songs to some animes:

* “My will” is used as the first ending theme to the anime Inuyasha.
* “Get Over” is used as the first opening theme to the anime Hikaru no Go.
* “SINCERELY ~ ever dream ~” is used as the third ending theme to the anime Hikaru no Go.
* “MUSIC IS MY THING” is used as the fifth ending theme to the anime Hikaru no Go.
* “Wo Ai Ni” is used as the second opening theme to the anime Asobotto Senki Goku.
* “SHINE OF VOICE” is used as the opening theme to the anime Ichigo 100%.
