About The Mighty Stef
The Sins of Sainte Catherine is the debut album for Dublin Artist The Mighty Stef [AKA Stefan Murphy]. Recorded Early in 2006 in Montreal, Canada and due for release on September 22.
The record is made up of a selection of 14 gems from 'The Mighty's' vast bank of songs written since his inception in 2003. Removing himself from the comfortable surroundings of his beloved Dublin city, Stef braved the cold winter of Montreal, A City where he knew virtually nobody, in order to concentrate on getting his long overdue first album recorded.
Stylistically, its hard to pigeonhole The Mighty Stef, if one was to try, you might say he walks the line between Punk, Country, Garage Rock N Roll, and gospel, with an overriding love of pure pop.
The NME seen Stef and his band in action and described it as 'channeling the ghost of Johnny Cash through the Devil Boned Blues Of Jack White '. The Music is influenced by everything from the Stones to the Pogues and from Nick Cave to the Clash.
The Mighty Stef live show is a sweaty and confrontational affair, the kids go crazy, stef goes crazy, his hard-nosed band of repribates go crazy too. It took a certain amount of thought, and a specific production style to capture the feeling of the live show on record. 'The Sins Of Sainte Catherine' succeeds in this, the production sound is rugged and raw, big and bold. Its like having a 55 minute TMS gig in your Gaf, the track listing even takes the listener on a similar journey as a well thought live set list. The Album comes out on The Mighty Stef's own 'The Firstborn Is Dead' label and is a triumph for an artist with a strong DIY ethic operating at the highest possible level.
The Mighty Stef has toured all over Ireland, has completed mini tours in the US and the UK as well as done some shows in Canada and on mainland Europe. He's also played support to more established acts such as The Zutons, Alabama 3, Isobel Campbell & Eugene Kelly, Arab Strap, Eastern Lane, Towers Of London, Fiery Furnaces, Alice Cooper [yeah..hehe] The Wonderstuff, John Squire. And shared the bill regularly with some of him own favourite Irish Acts such as The Things, Humanzi. Redneck Manifesto, Republic Of Loose, The Walls and Jape to name but a few.
