"Blues and The Abstract Truth" -a thoughtful approach to the blues scale with Nick Mancini
Saturday, February 17th, 2018
Join vibraphonist, composer, arranger, band leader, Nick Mancini for this special masterclass. Based on Mancini's personal belief that all the greatest jazz musicians have an element of the blues in their playing, this forum attends to the many ways in which the blues scale can be used as a foundation for improvisation & how it can be personalized and further explored. Drawing on the inspiration of jazz icons such as Louis Armstrong (trumpet), Charlie Parker (alto sax), Milt Jackson (vibraphone) & John Coltrane (tenor sax), Nick will demonstrate & break down various melodic motifs commonly associated with this iconic assembly of notes, as well as dissect it for its application to chord changes found in tunes that do not fall under the category of blues. Special attention will be given to practice techniques & regimens. Students will be granted the opportunity to play, and questions are welcomed at any time during the clinic. Nick will be performing a concert with his 4tet featuring Nick on vibes, James Yoshizawa on drums, Jordan Richards on bass & John Tegmeyer on clarinet following the clinic at 7:30pm. (Beginner to Intermediate - All Ages - All Instruments) (free for SRM students attending the concert)
