7:00 PM
virtuosos in search of new adventures
Alex Maguire (piano) Martin Speake (alto sax). Door/food 7.0 pm, music 8.30. Students £5 (see note below).

ALEX, after studying with Howard Riley and John Cage, co-founded the Ping Pong Club in the early 1980s and has since performed and recorded throughout Europe, the Americas and Japan, most notably with Sean Bergin, Han Bennink, Peter Brotzmann and Hatfield and The North. He is currently working on settings of the poetry of Sicilian Nobel laureate Salvatore Quasimodo for a new sextet.

MARTIN first became widely known in the group Itchy Fingers which won 1986 BBC-televised Schlitz Young Jazz Musicians competition and toured the world for two years. He then left the group to develop many diverse projects and has established himself as a major composer and improviser, as comfortable playing Charlie Parker as free improvising with drummer Mark Sanders, playing standards with Ethan Iverson and Indian music with Dharambir Singh. He has to date recorded 20 CDs under his own name.

NOTE. To avoid disappointment, guests are advised to book in advance via this site (up to 6.0 pm on day of gig). The earlier you book, the nearer the front your seat will be. If claiming a student discount, please bring valid student ID and you will be refunded in cash on the night. Please arrive in good time for the gig: it is difficult to hold seats once the music has started. In addition to the tickets allocated to this site, a certain number may be purchased in person or by phone 01273 674847 from the cafe and at other jazz gigs. Remaining unreserved tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis from 7.0 pm on the evening of the gig. Tickets booked online cannot be refunded in the event of non-attendance.
