The second of Mitsuko Uchida's Schubert series opens with the Sonata in B major, D.575.

One of the composer's less well-known sonatas, it is nevertheless exquisitely beautiful, full of his trademark melodiousness.

The A minor Sonata D.845 is a substantial, uncompromising work, its driving energy and bleak textures contrasting with an irresistible tenderness. Its central set of variations finish as if in an other-worldly dream.

To conclude, the D major Sonata D.850 is a high-octane piece, an exceptionally extrovert sonata for Schubert. Wit, humour and good-natured passion dance through its four movements.

This concert takes place as part of Mitsuko Uchida's three-year project in collaboration with Southbank Centre.
