A hidden gem from 1993 and the very first Jazz Festival. The release of hitherto unsuspected recordings of the brass ensemble co-led by the gifted composer John Warren and master saxophonist John Surman drew terrific reviews for a suite distinguished by sumptuous ensemble voicings and deftly placed solo statements, all inspired by the extraordinary 19th century journeying of Warren’s grandfather.

The original rhythm team of bassist Chris Laurence and drummer John Marshall provides peerless momentum for an ensemble drawn together specially for the occasion from the ranks of the Royal Academy of Music’s jazz course.
