By Byron Graham Though the history of the slender-necked string instrument dates all the way back to ancient Egypt, few musicians play the lute these days. Perhaps that's why world-renowned lutist Nigel North essentially taught himself the versatile instrument, laying the foundation for a unique and storied career that includes work as a musician, music director, songwriter and professor at the Early Music Institute at Indiana University since 1999. North will offer a solo concert as part of the Lamont School of Music's Guest Artist series at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, at the University of Denver's Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 East Iliff Avenue. Tickets are $10 at newmancenterpresents.com/visiting.
