Gary France is well known to the Perth musical family as the inaugural WAAPA Artist in Residence in Jazz Drums (1986) founder of the WAAPA Percussion Ensemble now known as Defying Gravity and the Perth Jazz Orchestra (PJO) and long time collaborator with Lucky Oceans and Dude Ranch. France will make his debut at the Ellington with the 2017 APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award-winning Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group – presenting an evening of HOT Latin Jazz in a tribute to Vibraphonist Cal Tjader the “Father of Latin Jazz and Salsa”. Tjader’s 1964 LP Soul Sauce , with the now iconic “Hot Sauce” bottle on the cover became the catalyst for Afro Cuban Jazz and the advent of “Salsa”. 2017 marks France’s 30th year in Australia and he returns to Perth for Celebrations at WAAPA as well as this special concert at the Ellington with the Daniel Susnjar Afro-Peruvian Jazz Group – who will be hitting the studio later this year to record their new album!
