The Grass is Dead are stoked to make their debut appearance at The Ante Room w/ David Gans! We are ready to celebrate life and music, so bring the boogie and let's have a blast!! Tickets: $7/ADV $10/DOS Performance time 8pm All Ages What’s in a name? Sometimes, everything… Grass is Dead are a bluegrass combo paying homage to the music and cultural legacy of The Grateful Dead, arguably America’s first folk rock band and one of the most influential musical artists of the last 50 years. The catalogue of the Dead’s music is a gold mine for string bands and story tellers, and Grass Is Dead have established themselves far and wide as premiere purveyors of this rich tradition of Americana music. Pickin’ and grinnin’ is what they do best, and they have been adapting Grateful Dead songs in their own bluegrass style since 1998. A festival favorite, Grass is Dead has built a loyal following from their home state of FL throughout the Eastern United States through burning live shows, and well beyond, through word of mouth, social media and old fashioned taper trees. The demand for Grateful Dead music is seemingly endless, and there are countless cover bands satisfying that demand on the local level, but there are not many artists out there approaching the music from the perspective of Grass is Dead. It is not complicated or artsy: this is a straight forward hootenanny built to last, and fans of either bluegrass music, The Grateful Dead, or both always leave happy, because sometimes there’s nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile… David Gans - Perhaps the foremost interpreter of Grateful Dead music today and an accomplished guitarist, singer and songwriter in his own right, David Gans has now shared with us his own well-crafted and heartfelt interpretations of some of the Grateful Dead’s best songs on It’s a Hand- Me-Down, released November 27th, 2015 on his Perfectible Recordings label. Gans approaches Grateful Dead music with a unique range and a rare degree of mastery on multiple levels: as a noted writer (Notable titles being his book co-written with Peter Simon, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Picture of the Grateful Dead [1985, 1996 re-release] and his most recent volume, This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead [Nov 2015], co-authored with Blair Jackson, presents the definitive story of the Grateful Dead in their own words), commentator, and radio-show host he has introduced, contextualized, and exposed Grateful Dead music to generations of Deadheads and casual fans. As a musician, singer, and impresario he has brought the music to life in solo and ensemble configurations. As an interviewer and documentor, he has chronicled the Grateful Dead experience from a kaleidoscopic array of perspectives, as an insider, an outsider, and a songsmith. It’s a Hand-Me- Down sets some of the Dead tunes Gans most enjoys performing in a “solo electric” context closely modeled on his performance style, making extensive use of looping and electronics to bring the sort of shimmery elastic feel required to do this material justice. David Gans will present a lecture preceded by a book signing/meet & greet and followed by the performance (in which he'll be sitting in with The Grass is Dead).
