Portico Quartet, the band which brings together folk, ambient and synthpop under the roof of modern jazz, will be at #studio on November 4th! Having founded in 2005 while the band members were studying ethnomusicology at School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), the London-based band currently consists of Jack Wylie (soprano, tenor saxophone), Duncan Bellamy (drums, hang), Milo Fitzpatrick (double bass) and Keir Vine (keyboard, hang). Portico Quartet, who has a special place among other modern jazz crews with its distinct use of hang, acquired the name "Portico" after being forced to play under a portico in Italy due to weather conditions. Having released its debut album Knee-Deep in the North Sea in 2007 on the Babel Label, Portico Quartet released Isla in 2009 and the namesake album in 2012. After the departure of Keir Vine in 2014, they dropped the "Quartet" and went on as "Portico", adopting a new genre and proving it with Living Fields (2015). Becoming a "Quartet" once again after Vine returned in 2016, Portico Quartet signed with Gondwana Records and recorded Art in the Age of Automaton, their brand new album due to be released on August 2017. On November 4th, #studio will host Portico Quartet, an authentic band which combines modern jazz with ambient and synthpop!
